Angry System Error on D5D - All images gone!

Dammit! I think this is the second time it's happened.

All fine and dandy, until suddenly the LCD displays "system error", red LED comes on and I can't turn off the camera until I remove the batt. Re-load batt, LCD screen says "card not usable, format now?"

WTH is going on??! File-recovery software cannot even retreive a single image!

Or is there a compatibility issue with the Kingston Elite Pro 512MB?

I'm more than a little hot under the collar now.... Anybody have any clues?

Erm.. I dun think there's a compatibility problem with Kingston Elite Pro 512MB.

I've got the following:
Kingston 1GB (normal speed)
Kingston Elite Pro 512MB
SanDisk Extreme

Never had any problems with either 3.

I think its time for u to make a trip down to Wisma...

I encountered some memory card problem (Kingston Elite Pro) lately also with the 5D.

My symptoms are slightly different but could be the same problem:

The camera can display the pictures on LCD but I can't read it using my computers nor PDA nor via the USB cable.

Tried to recover images using a number of recovery software to no avail. Only Lexar image rescue 2 help to salvage the pictures (though still with some problems like abnormally large file size etc). But images do still look ok. So try perhaps Lexar Image rescue 2.

I had formatted the card, but still have not properly tested the card and camera to know if it is a one-off problem or something more sinister to warrant a visit to Sony SC.

did you guys format the card IN the camera? that's recommended, and especially after deleting images repeatedly, to ensure proper format and indexing. most people (myself the biggest culprit!) tend to do a cop/ cut paste in Windows but I make it a point to format the card once in a while, especially before important shoots, to ensure its ok. i use kingston 1gb and 2gb elite pro cards with no problem although the 2gb one tends to be a little slow but that's a separate issue. such read/write problems have happened to me even on my treo 650's SD card but a reformat solved that.

Hi, try GetDataBack from http://www.runtime.org It's never failed me.

On second thoughts, u might want to check your card. My Kingston 512 card gave me that a few times before it died completely and became "unable to format".

Cheers

Looks like there are a few users of Kingston Elite Pro CF.

The last time I tried the 1G Elite Pro, the speed is worst than the normal Kingston CF 1G (Free with the KM5D camera). Not worth the extra $$$ paid for the elite Pro card. Don't know why it does not work well with the KM5D.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I've got 2x 512 & 2x 1024MB Elite Pro cards.

I think I've isolated the problem, and it's this one particular 512MB card. Now it's completely un-usable in my camera.

Reliance on technology is a nerve-wrecking thing. Ain't no way am I going to get one of those 8GB cards, no matter how reliable they say it is. Card damaged/lost/corrupt, and that's a hell lotta eggs in one basket.

I agree with you on putting all your eggs in one basket. However with higher mega pixel count on future CCD picture size will be larger and you will need the larger CF card.

I just bought 2 2GB Kingston Elite Pro... the card is very slow but it's ok if u are patient... the only thing is that I observe sometimes it tends to hang the camera...
