KM5D Power Consumption Test

Interesting information on the KM5D power consumption for various load.

It's seems better to leave your camera ON for the whole shoot and only switch it OFF when time to really keep it. The auto power off power drain is only 0.25mA and saves the trouble of camera going through the power-on process and resetting the lens position.

interesting info, no wonder the battery depleted so quickly when I doing a lot of long exposure shoot last night, AS really suck up a lot of power

I usually switch off my camera when I'm not using. Anyway start time is pretty fast.

I presume if you're doing long exposure you're using a tripod or resting the camera on a fixed surface. In this case, wouldn't it be better to turn of AS since its not needed?

Looks like more reason to turn off AS when taking long exposure on proper support. I myself included never turn off AS even on tripod, cause happen once turn OFF AS forgot to turn it back on after that for handhold shot.

The power drain when auto off is considered low and when half press the startup is slightly faster than POWER-ON.

Most of the time I leave the camera ON all the time until when I want to keep the camera.

those of us with faulty 5D shutters and need to "reboot" after the 1st shot everytime will need to conserve the life of the on/off switch!

as for long exposure shots, i think the drain comes from keeping the mirror up, much like you do when cleaning the CCD, hence the recommendation to have a full battery when cleaning. i've not noticed a difference between AS on or off (because once i left AS off for a few weeks of usage without noticing it!!!!). each charge takes me through about 400 exposures before the low-batt warning comes on.

I normally set AS off untill i need it really badly. Keeping the LCD info display off until i need it helps too.

forgot to mention, also keeping the post-shoot review option OFF helps a great deal. playback only if you really need to. that helps!

Keeping the mirror up should not consume much battery power... it's the LCD review plus constant chimping that does the batteries in...
