A friend of mine has to plans to buy a Nikon D200, after he saw my baby now he want one too... I use a wide range of Nikkor lenses, the expensive series... but he is more on the budget.... he has already sold his entire Canon set to someone else and need to buy everything new....
Like to know what kind of lenses you use with your D200 so I can show him a few combinations for different budgets.... and what people love to use in practice... thanks for the help ![]() |

Please tell you friend to consider carefully why the changeover of an entire system.
Budget is the most important consideration for most of us but is not the only factor. Lens catalogue/availability, accessories support and upgrade path (if intended) are also important. Once he confirms his shooting style (landscape, portrait, events etc ), matching equipment becomes easier. Personally, the 18-200 was an important consideration for me. The other was its support of manual lenses. |

Let us know his main shooting interest and it'd be easier to introduce the entry to mid-level glasses that he may consider owning. |

since he used to have a entire canon set, i am sure he knows well what lens/focal length he use most or like best.
doesnt he has any idea what he wants? if he wants a do-all, then 18-200 is great. if has certain preferences, then different lens good for different things. for 500, it will be better for him to get a 18-70 than a 35/2. but if he shoots mainly low light. a 35/2 is better. what does he want? like to know the experiences of other users of the D200 with several budget lenses...
He don't know or he will use one big zoom-lens or several lenses.... he wanna have several options and make then a decision... Why some people prefer one big zoom-lens (18-200) instead of 2 or 3 seperate lenses? Because he is changing his entire system and making a new big investment, I advice him to see all the several options and combinations... what other people are using with there D200.... he knows what I have but that is too much expensive for him... Choose a lens that makes the most sense.
macro: 60mm, 90 mm, 105mm, 180mm Wide: 12-24 f/4 tele: 17-55 f/2.8 zoom: 70-200 f/2.8 super zoom: 300 f/4 or sigma 50-500mm fixed lens: popular 50mm 1.8, too many others to name.. Depending on budget, there's nikkor, sigma, tokina, tamron to choose from. hope that helps.

If he wants to start off cheap, and still maintain the quality, stick to the prime lenses. ESPN has made very good reccomendations with the 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.8. And how he adds on to the range depends on how he wants to shoot, the choices change accordingly. Also check if he intends to use film, if so, do remind him on the DX lenses... Cheers, |

why so much debate? he should just get the f-mount counterparts for his canon lenses.

wah.........showoff leh..........haha............but definitely have the clout to do so.....look at the equipment u used as u describe..... "professional line" and your choice of putting the price there..........no pun intended......
....my next target is the tokina 80-400....given its relatively cheap price....compare to nikkor proffessional class......i guess ppl (like me) prefer one big zoom lense nikkor 18-200 becos' its easier to carry around.....admit it isnt as gd as "professional line" but hey......i am just an amateur and i travel light....and again its relatively cheap compared to the "professional line".....they are willing to spend a bit more for convenience but not a lot more for being in the "professional line". It the truth of life. ![]()

If he is already using other system (although sold), there is no difference in selecting lens in another system. Selecting lens is a matter of what you want to shoot and your preference not about $7000 lens or budget lens. If he does not know what he wants it is no point to have a selection as well. You should be able to advise on the difference between similar range and the advantage and disadvantage i.e. f2.8 vs f3.5 etc and not comparable image quality between the 2 (I am sure you will know cannot be compared) and also the advantage of prime vs zoom since you own Professional lens.
