Hi,
I am newbie to SLR film camera. I am planning to buy Canon EOS 5. Can anybody suggest me the current second hand price and should I buy EOS 300V instead of EOS 5? Thanks in advance for your advice. Regards Hello |

Go to this thread below for the EOS300V the EOS5 is a long gone dinosaur from another era. http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthrea...threadid=20211 ![]() |

The EOS-5 is still a quite capable camera. But you will miss some of the new features like E-TTL flash metering. AF tracking is slow on the EOS-5 compare to the new bodies. Saw one at $450 at camera workshop today, but well used cond.

The EOS-5 sucks? Why? Any real reasons? For that price, here are some things about the EOS-5 which don't suck :
Interchangeable focusing screens Bright viewfinder Spot metering Very silent film wind and rewind 5 fps motordrive Very very good AF in low light, much better than the EOS-30/50 Excellent metering Built in flash with zoom head Only slightly heavier than the EOS-30 and lighter than the EOS-3 Great for discreet silent shooting The very fact that this is a 10 year old design, and still selling, ought to tell you something about this camera. Till today, there is no EOS body in this price range which offers you so much functionality. Of course you might not need all these features, then the 30 or 300V would do just fine. |

The same camera which Im still using after so many years and still waiting for a worthy replacement.... for the price of the EOS3 I would expect to have data feature which it doesn;t have and EOS1V is just too heavy to use comfortably. For the price I really have no complains, and the vertical grip is so much more superior to EOS30/50. Lack of ETTL is a bit of lament when I shoot studio setup, but oh well EOS300 will do just fine. EOS30? I will just save the $$ and get a 300V instead.... comes with illum lcd panel also....absolutely necessary. That's wat I wish EOS5 had.... |

well, as not confuse the newbie, perhaps i shall offer my own reasons why i will not go for eos5. no flaming, no offence, just my own observations and conclusions. after i offer my point of view, let the newbie decide for him/herself. then again, those loyal users of eos5 i must say are truly not blinded by the latest techy bells and whistle; for this, i salute u as a real photog dedicated to vision and not equiptment ;-) so here goes:
#changeable focussing screen: never need this function. whats more, gotta be careful to align it properly everytime u change it. i hav nothing against this. #brignt viewfinder+ spotmeter+5fps+ good metering: every pro-grade cam has this. ie this is nothing new. i hav nothing against this. #silent film drive: eos5 shutter "feels " flaccid to me; i prefer strong&decisive shutters eg eos1v/F5. #lighter than eos3: frankly, u need the extra weight as "ballast" just like a ship.... extra weight esp with vert grip will allow u to do extra stunts like handhold a 80-200/2.8 down to 1/45. then u dont need monopod; or things like 28mm down to 1/8 for landscape. then u can dont need the tripod.
#low light AF: is a joke on eos5. the only ones that pass are 1v /F5 #built in flash: is also another joke. 1st: built in flash pics suffer from redeye coz it is just not far away enuff fro mthe lens. 2nd: it compromises build quality near the prism housing. # the control dail is frankly, a bit too stiff. many have it broken off. its a documented phenomenon. and the buttons are all over the place. whereas eos3/eos 1v layout is cleaner; all on the top left, with the rarely used ones on top right nevertheless, its the pic that counts. if i were meet osama oneday and someone on the spot hands me an eos5 , i would shoot him with the eos5 ;-) cheerios. |

My friend, it's about cost. Yah, every pro grade camera has all the bells n whistles. If I can get the same stuff for $500-600 why shd I pay $2000 for a pro SLR?
Abt interchangeable focusing screens I've found the Beattie screens better than the EOS-5 screen, so it's a definite plus. Low light focus... have compared EOS-5 to stuff like EOS-30? Lower end cams are a joke. Some ppl like "flaccid" aka silent/quiet shutter and mirror. I do. I dun like so much noise, like EOS-3. Frankly the high pitch EOS-3 sound is very irritating. Abt handholding a 80-200/2.8 down to 1/45s you dun need a heavy camera. With the Canon 70-200/2.8 IS (or 75-300IS or 28-135IS or any of the other IS lenses) you can handhold till 1/15s or 1/8s with an EOS-300 and still get great sharp pics doe to the IS. Yah we all know built in flash is not great but if and when you need flash and you dun have the external flash you have one on the 5 but youre dead if you use a EOS-3/1V/F5 since no flash. I've been in this situation a few times. The built in flash saved my butt. And for a newbie it is very useful. Weight... many ppl may want to travel light. Some ppl may want to carry an 8x10 view camera. That's their preference. |

Hheheh....Y Eos5 no good? I have been using it for years....solid man.....I am thinking of getting the Eos3.....but tabulek!..
Simple....u are a newbie, ask yourself : do you need so much functions of the eos3? To tell you the truth....I dont even fully utilised the functions of the eos5!......actually, you just need "Manual", AV, TV and Program mode..thats all..... So many functions for what, imagine you wanna take a picture, you have to set this and set that and by the time you are done with the settings....you missed the shot!....ANyway, its up to you lah....if I were you, I will get the EOS30......not too good or not too bad....just nice functions to cover most of your needs....I am not sure of the 300V...but I heard from my friends that its good in terms of forcusing speed.Ü ANyway, if you are not sure whether you are serious about photography, buy a 2nd hand EOS30......just in case you give up half way....you can still sell it away...wont logi so much you know..hehehhe... I also agree with the handy BUilt in flash...this is the reason y I dont upgrade to Eos3....no internal flash.....the internal flash on EOS5 is so helpful....so so useful ...... anyway, Welcome you to Photography, the World of Creativity Last edited by MatthewSCL; 5th January 2003 at 04:58 PM. |
