Question Modified IR Canon camera need advise.

Do any IR guru or member has modified canon camera into IR camera?

Do the EOS 300D or G6 modified to IR camera, it will need shorted aparture to capture IR photo compare to normal way (long exposure of time) with tripod on ?

It will be a bit tire get the tripod and screw on and unscrew the R72 IR filter from the lens.

Need advise and comment, welcome Pro and Con of the Modified camera to IR.

Firstly, it does not matter whether you modify a Canon, Nikon or other maker's camera for IR purposes, once modified, they mostly have the same desired effect, that is, much faster shutter speeds.

That being said, whether or not you need to screw/flip on a filter depends on how you modify the camera. Here are the two most common ways:

IR Only Camera
The modification process here involves removing the internal IR cut filters and replacing it with an IR pass filter such as the Hoya R72, B+W 092 or Lifepixel.com's filter. Once the original filter is replaced, the camera will no longer be able to take visible light photos as the new filter effectively cuts off visible light, allowing only Near Infrared (NIR) light to 'pass' through to the CCD. However, shutter speeds for NIR photography will be extremely fast, in the range of 1/1000s at f/8 on a mordrately sunny day, so freeze action IR photography will be possible. Furthermore, composition is easy as you would be able to see your subjects as in normal photography.

IR + Visible Light Camera
The modification process here involves the removal of the internal IR cut filter and replacing it with a normal clear glass filter, or leaving it out completely. In order to take IR photos, you would need to screw/flip on the IR filter over your lenses and in order to take normal photos, you'd need to screw on a Hot Mirror filter over your lenses to cut out the excess NIR. Shutter speeds for IR photography will be similar to the IR only camera. Composition, however, would be tough as you would need to compose your shot before putting on the filter to take it. The main advantage that this camera has over the other is that it can still be used to take normal photos.

As for the tripod, don't modify your camera with the intention of dumping the tripod, it is an excellent aid for composing your shots.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Matthew

Once modified, the PnS DigiCam will capture video in IR. There was another regular IR shooter, Tomcat, who did several IR videos.

With DSLRs you do not see the composition throught the viewfinder in IR, only in visible light. The image will only be in IR after you capture it.

Cheers,
Matt

I used to use non-modified camera body for IR photo
Turning back to 1992 when I first shoot my IR with IR film, the revolution of digital photography really made me enjoy my digitally shoot IR photo in 2002
As the time goes by, I shot more IR and experimented a lot in lighting and various subjects
Then, a couple months ago I decided to modify 1 camera body for IR
I've never regret it

I'd like to suggest you to try the non-modified IR shoot, just to make sure that you really love to shoot IR
It's kind of thing to date a girl before you propose her to be your girlfriend, and further... to possibly be your soulmate

In other hand, shooting IR is not solely getting a picture with different look
Yes, different look will make people look at your photo but it doesn't automatically mean that your photo has good quality
I'd like to see non-IR photo which is nicely composed, correctly exposed and creatively approached rather than IR photo which doesn't have proper composition, exposure and approach

Camera is only a tool, good photo depends on the man behind the camera
The hierarchy is human takes control over the tool and it's not gonna be the tool takes control over the human

If you wish to take a look at my IR photo in CS, please kindly look at: Melintas, Broken Wing, Hier Rust Ursulin Zuster, and Pass By

Many Thanks to Kristupa and Matt valuable advise.

I am agree with Kristupa advise, IR skill and passion much depend on the person, whose behind the Camera, whose trigger the shot of the picture.

IR is a kind of surreal effect different from normal and mono photo shot.
