Default Has anyone read the review of 17-55 f2.8 IS?

Just noticed that the test reports and review is up at Photozone:

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...5_28/index.htm

Seems like the performance of this lens is very sound, in terms of MTF result the numbers are up there and maybe even slightly better than popular L glass like 17-40L, 16-35L & 17-35L.. But I guess MTF alone is hardly conclusive as the contrast, colour and flare control etc is not mentioned.. wonder whether the colour and bokeh quality can match the L lens.

CA control is also seems to be comparable to the L zoom, only weakness shows in the test is some vignetting problems at f2.8. But I guess u can always stop down a bit when shooting a bright daylight scene when the vignetting will be more obvious?

So how many CSera will be tempted to get one?

The price is certainly very high though

At almost $2,000 it better be good. I will stick to my 10-22 and 17-40L combo. I suppose if the answers are YES to the following then perhaps ....

Q1 Do you need the extra 1 stop (2.8)?
Q2 Do you need the IS?
Q3 Do you have spare cash?
Q4 Is your intention to stick with 1.6x FOV crop cameras?

If it is yes only for Q1 and Q3, I would rather go for the 16-35L.

Optically, the 17-55 may be better than the 17-40 or 16-35 but how significantly better??

For me the deal breaker is the build quality. For $2k I would expect L like build quality (IE, weather-sealed and like a tank) and not the typical EF-S build which is actually worse than stuff like Sigma's EX series. The focus ring on the 17-55 looks like the plastic crap on my 10-22!

Hmmm...looks like the price factor for this lense is the key concern for everyone. Wonder how much it will cost at launch.

in HK the RRP by canon is about 9,1XX.. so i guess street price will be around 8,XXX, around 1600 to 1700 SGD..

it might be available, but i've not really seen it at a shop yet.

Price in Singapore always higher than HK

Guess it will cost close to $2k here...

Dunno when will Canon come out with a body that integrate the IS or VR features (probably have to wait long long), can use any large aperture lens together with IS then. Always like to stay away from my tripod as far as possible.

Doubt they would adopt such commercially suicidal approach....anyway look at Konica....their IS body did not help them at all....

Canon already has a sizeable lineup of lenses with an IS feature, which you usually pay a hefty premium for. If they integrate a anti-shake sensor right into the body, it would no doubt anger the many who bought the IS version of a lens over a non-IS one. Furthermore, Canon might be encroaching into KM's patents in the unlikely event it is ever considering to implement it.

Probably not the patent of KM as many compact digital cam already has IS built in the sensor.

I also believe that it's unlikely that Canon will include this in their body anytime soon, due to the reason like what u guys have mentioned.

Unless one day this feature become the de facto standard in all other DSLRs make, especially Nikon, then maybe Canon may give in due to competitive pressure .. but this is unlikely in the foreseeable future yet.

Since most reviews show that adding IS elements in the lens does induce some level of detriment to the optical quality, I tot shifting the feature to the sensor might be good idea. Too bad there r other commercial considerations that prevent this from happening..

Whao loa ... almost can buy a decent "L" lens liao ... let's see whether its performance could meet its price tag!

For me, its way way too expensive and the fact that is a EFS lens, is a real deal breaker.
For $1900 ,its almost 40%of the Eos 5D, I would rather save up more fot a FF DSLR.
