Default Question regarding IS

i noticed that some lenses does not have any choices for IS(eg. mode 1 and 2). if i do panning with this lens, will the picture be ruined, or will the lens sense that i am doing panning and automatcally account for vertical movement only?

thanks. have to ask this as my KM camera is able to do that.

Usually only the tele lens with IS have the option of mode 1 or 2 IS. Mode 2 is of course used for panning. If u're refering to IS lens with no option eg: 24-105 L IS or 17-85 IS and u try to pan with IS more most likely your photo will be ruined so as evenstar puts it, turn the IS off when u pan.
