Hi all,
I am so regularly made aware of just how good the anti dust feature is on the Olympus. Truely When I take photo's outside "lets say, sunsets for instance", I will take both my 20D and my E-500. I do this for various reasons, (both have diffent lens for a start), tonal differences, a number of things. When I get home, most of my PS time spent on the photo's is getting rid of the dust bunnies from the shots by my 20D !!! I like both cameras, but I "DREAD" using my 20D for such shots where as I have no worries using the E-500.

Every time the lens is removed small b*star*s (read dust) are waiting to enter through the big open hole. These are quite unintelligent things, so they don't understand that there is no point in entering my camera. What happens to them is that they got really shaken up, like a dog that shakes off the rain, than after that they get stuck on something. Now, this 'something' is that worries me, how often do we have to change that? And, is there any risk that the supersonic shaker shakes loose something else than dust? I hope not, but we will see in a few years time. Certainly, until at least now, I also love this supersonic dust shaker in my E-500. ![]() BTW: Do you all turn off, then on the camera when you change lens? I still have to get that habit into my fingers. It is at lens change all dust enters the camera. That is where Oly made a mistake in design. The shaker should not be activated at turn on time but after lens change. That way they could have considerably cut down 'first shot after power on' time also. Strange that nobody told them that. |

I have got a friend who complained that even he doesn't change lens, after he bought 18-200 VR lens, dusts landed on the sensor.
I think Oly did it right to have it activated everytime the camera is power-up. Never have dust issue ever since I use Oly DSLR for about 18 months. |

dust doesn't juz come from the air around us. when the parts inside the camera/lens worn out, there will be tiny particles flaking off, that becoms dust. so it doesn't mean u dun change lens, u r safe from dust. Oly has certainly thot about it & the best solution is to do the shake everytime the cam is on, irregardless of whether a lens is changed or not. everybody who uses a SLR or DSLR were expected to off the cam before lens change, or at least thats the good practice theory.

It is a simple trade-off of x secs during the startup vs the need to clean the images later. Even if Olympus make it configurable, I will leave it on during Startup anyway.

However it is, configurable, or at power on, or at lens change, I also love it. That makes us not having to look for a dealer or camera shop that does the job for free. Also people who don't print pics or do the printings at home or through Internet don't visit so many camera dealers, so Olypeople don't have to bother. I also prefer the longer start-up time compared to dust.
As I understand there are two kind of photographers, those who don't admit (or don't see) they have problem with dust and Oly owners who don't know what dust on CCD is. I am happy to belong to the second group. ![]() |
