Hey... nice pics. The first one's a weevil. Do you have the top view for #4? Would be interested in finding out exactly what that is - should be an ant owing to the elbowed antennae...

Agree with husky, #1 looks like a weevil due to proboscis & palcement of antennae.

I like #2.

Thanks husky and cerebrus! Esp for the ID. The weevil really looks kind of wierd cos of its built....very odd shape.

#4 is not an ant I think as it has wings and can fly. And sorry no top shots of this fella.

Not really trying new styles. I mostly use 5x7 crops, but at times the compo just don't work, so use 6x7, and sometimes sq crops. So really depends on the pic.

*me tsks at myself*

Oh! Didn't notice the hind legs of that bee-ant-like-creature earlier. Didn't know how I did that. Sorry... in exam mode... have been just skimming through posts...

It's a wasp. A chalcidid wasp... Adrian's pic is a chalcidid too but they're both different species. Yeah, they're very small (usually < 1cm), have elbowed antennae and enlarged hind legs. They're also parasitiods, and lay their eggs inside caterpillars and larvae of beetles and flies.

Bees, wasps and ants all come under the order of hymenoptera (the latter two are, besides the termites which are another order altogether, truly eusocial insects with caste systems). If not for their distinguishing behaviour or certain body structures, they can be quite difficult to tell apart at times! And now and then, you have some smart species of flies trying to mimic them...

Nice pics... they're rather cute wasps.

See here for more details.

(And aww yewkay, I ain't no expert yet...)

Not expert but never fail to impress me. So these are the creatures that've been laying eggs in butt cats..
