Get a Canon G3 for like $1200 and use the $300 for memory, batteries and other accessories.

hard to say which one is better cos they are suited for different purposes. what are your needs? what do you want to use the camera for? if you don't know what you want, you most likely won't get one that meets your needs.

If you want top notch image quality, go for F717, if you want features, go for 5700.

As ckiang mentioned, you can consider the G3 as well. Slightly beyond your budget is the 7Hi also...

To stay well inside your budget and yet get a high quality, well-rounded camera that performs almost as fast as 717, try the Fujifilm S602Z The savings could be used on an external flash, backup batteries and chargers, extra money, teleconverter, wide-angle converter, filters, etc.

Here's something I quoted (and amended) from a reply....

Anyway, either camera (717 or 5700) could do the job. I did consider the 5700 (717 was not launched yet) but got the 602Z in the end. It offers the best bang for buck in my opinion (fast auto focus, good zoom range of 35mm-210mm, quite fast lens (F2.8-3.1), easily accessible settings, good image quality, support of external flash, fast 5 frames per second burst mode, good battery life and use of standard batteries).

perhaps frostice007, you might want to let us know what prompted you to shortlist the cameras. we could point you to some other cameras with similar qualities but at a more affordable cost.

for 717 or 5700, you need to budget at least several hundreds more for accessories (memory for sure, backup batteries or battery grip for the 5700, external flash, UV filters, lens adaptor, etc). if not, you'll end up like buying a Porsche only to drive around in a small carpark.

I would suggest u read up more b4 jumping fr an auto/P&s camera to a prosumer camera. You might end getting more blur shots where using a higher end camera.
You might also want to consider Olympus c730.

Personally, I would go with the 717 but I seriously don't think $1500 is gonna be enough, unless you've a separate budget of ~$500 for storage, additional batt, flash, etc.

Talking Nikon CP5700

I'll go for CP5700 even it had bad low light focus and slow in autofocus, but it had excellent lens quality.

Sony F717 is good at nightframe and nightshot, but iff you go deeply review at www.dpreview.com, you will found that some limitation on shutter speed which had same problem with G2, which when you use high speed, you can't use large apeature.

Also CP5700 have MB-E5700, which atleast I have SLR feeling not like F717, just feel weird. But I like Sony 717 focusing ring which CP5700 don't have.

Sony also good cause have AF illuminate focus which other camera don't have. But I still can use manual focus as long as I got Spot metering & AE Lock. everything will find for me.......

How does the SLR feel help in taking better photos?

I would say go for CoolPix 5K, add a CrystalVue Sharpshooter 8X, you got yourself a >1200mm zoom! to shoot bird.
Total Zoom = Camera optical Zoom multiply by 8 =

I agree with longman. Nikon CP5700 is worth considering. Besides the low contrast AF issue which I believe Nikon is looking into it now and can be fixed with firmware upgrade.

Sony 717 is good choice if you opt out the somewhat steep learning curve u need to go thru with CP5700. The 1 thing I dislike about Sony in general is the Memory Stick, small capacity & ex.
