Default 35mm film on a MF camera

Has anyone tried loading 35mm film on a TLR (I want to use it to get a 24mm X 60mm negative [on a 6x6 camera], just for fun).
I can develop my own B&W negatives so that is not a concern.

What I am worried about is what happens after the 12th snap on a TLR (mine does not take 220 film only 120). Can I reset the count back to 0.

Would appreciate any/ all feedback (that is constructive), Thanks.

Hi,

I shoot 35mm on MF most of the time, saves me a lot on cost and not to mention the panoramic effect. I shoot mostly on my Kiev 6C and Pentacon 6, Can achieve quite good results with proper mounting and masking, esp with wide angle lenses. I do have a TLR but have not tried shooting on 35mm. I don't think there is much of a problem after the 12th frame as you can reset the counter by unwinding the back cover release knob at the bottom (for my original issue seagull TLR) without opening the back. Try it with an empty spool. The difficult part is of course the unloading. Must be in total darkness or in darkbag. Since you do your own developing, should be no problem fiddling with the cam in the dark.

here is a sample pic taken with a pentacon 6 TL, 50mm CZJ MC, handheld on Lucky SHD 100 pushed to 800.

This one on Kiev 6C, 50mm CZJ non MC, handheld on Lucky SHD 100 pushed to 400

PM me if you want to discuss more on this... I am looking for a kaki to try out new tricks too..

Regards,
Rafiz

that's pretty cool! You had to mod the holders a little right?

Trial and error needed to hold the cartridge for the cartridge side and have to mod the intake spool a little on the spool side, I dedicate one spool (per camera) for 35mm film loading and if I need to shoot 6X6, I use a normal spool. After securing a steady travel path for the film, can start preparing the mask. Or choose to ignore the mask to get spill over on the sprocket holes.

Thanks for the images and tips. I shall try and see if the counter resets when I open the back cover knob. For now I plan to let the image spill over into the sprocket holder. May think about a mask in the future.

I shall do a little bit of experimentation and get back when I get some results. Thank you.

Thanks for the interesting insight, it's always great to hear of the less tried and tested way of doing things.

Hmmm Shooting 35mm SLR on MF film. Interesting. I tried something like that once using a box taped and cut MF film with a 35mm point and shoot with the back removed. Didn't quite get the control I want. Image super blurr... maybe the focal distance was not quite there... gave it up to try something else. Would love to learn your setup.

I am planning to make my own pano cam that will utilise a P6 lens mount and 35mm films maybe to the tune of 24mm X 96mm ... but haven't got through to finalising the design yet...

Actually I'm not quite as handy as you. Mine is a purpose built camera in the shape of the Roundshot 28-220 Pano cam.

Observr - Sorry, no pics yet. I'm on vacation at the moment and using it for the first time. So far put 4 rolls through already. Will be back in Singapore month end and have them developed then but I won't be able to scan them till end May. Will definitely post the shots up then. Wish me luck, I have no idea if I'm using it correctly. The people at Seitz have been extremely helpful and prompt with all the queries I have... from loading of film till actual usage of the camera.

arttl - Yep, I got it from the website. You don't see many of these for sale on the used market. Seems like owners hang on to them and they are relatively rare. Been in production for about 4 years and mine is only serial no. 3xx. There was a 35mm version for sale on CS a few years ago IIRC.

Hi Kanni, thanks for the appreciation.. you have the power... to do it too...

you will need to load the film onto an empty spool as usual. I modified a few empty spools so that it will hold the film firmly. once modified, it is rather irreversible so if you plan to also shoot 6X6 with the cam, it is best to get spare empty spools. I got the empty spools from Ruby. To unload, I use a dark bag, extract the cartrdge and the spool out of the cam and wind the film back into the cartridge. On the cartridge side, I use foam tapes to line the cam such that it will prevent the cartridge to slide or roll. Took me several trials before I found the right combination.

I prefer to shoot using this format on an SLR styled MF body. As a hobbyist, I can't afford the expensive ones so I am using pentacon 6TL and kiev 6C/60 as it allows interchangeability of lenses. Wide lenses are best. I use the 50mm and 30mm a lot. the setback when trying out this format on TLRs or Folding cams is their longer focal lengths usually between 75 - 105mm.

ANyway, I hope to experiment more in future, just converted a spolit 6TL body into a pinhole camera that will use roll film... If you feel like peeking into my setup, pm me and maybe we can arrange to meet up... You have a choice...

That s really helpful. I will try to feature out. If I still cannot ( which most possibly is ) I will PM u cos now quite busy with work and have to look for one personal MF camera first if this going to damage the original MF camera.

wow very nice panoramic effect! i wonder if i use a 35mm film on a holga, would it get a panoramic effect too since holga is a MF toy camera? i don't own one, so i can't try out. and i've been trying to justify the reasons to buy a holga, and i always wanted a panoramic camera... so if it does, then it'll be a very good deal!

Hi antitrust... (I hope you can trust me on this one... :P) I believe you can get a panoramic effect using a Holga and some are selling over ebay (and I think Yahoo! too) with a panoramic adapter. As you said, it is a toy camera.... If you want better control, I'd suggest a TLR at least or if you want interchangeable lenses... hmmm... try a Kiev 6C or Kiev 60! 1st, you have a range of lenses to play with... my favourite the 50mm CZJ and the 30mm Arsat for this effect... additionally... you have full manual controls just like any ordinary SLRs.. better still if you can get a Pentacon 6TL. If you want to go professional about it .. A mamiya 7 (I think) is a good buy...

Alternatively, if you want flexibility... medium format cams with interchangeable backs will be an excellent choice... of course... Those are big and bulky ways to shoot panorama on 35mm

The beeter option...(with more progress packages)... XPAN!!

BTW.. I stop at Pentacon 6TL... cannot justify myself buying the Mamiyas and Hassies...

thanks for the reply! haha. i don't think i'll be putting in that much money in a MF TLR for now. i think the most i'll go for is a seagull which is about 80-100 second hand? heh. come to think of it, maybe i should just skip the Holga and get a seagull. hmm. Cool!

Hi Obzervr,

I have been most interested in panos as of late. Am interested in your setup and would be happy to buy you a kopi. I do have a TLR and was actually looking at the mamiya 7 II and Xpan, however would like to try out the TLR mod first.

Cheers!
