By registering your freelance photography as a business, one thing good is that it will benifits both your customers and yourself. As customers or clients will have more confidence on you and your service. Because they knows how to deal with you if things goes wrong. Or they will not afraid of you getting disappear.
But for every $$$ you earn, everything needs to report into your income tax returns.

Registration of business is $65. You can register at www.bizfile.gov.sg, but you need to log in with your singpass to register, payment is by cashcard, credit card and internet banking. For HDB Home Office Scheme, you can apply through their website www.hdb.gov.sg, I believe its $20 for 3 years.

i know of at least 2 CSer who have done so.. 1 good thing is that when big companies need to hire you. A company name will be good for them to bill to and settle their invoices easier.

Some big companies don't accept "freelancers" that issue anonymous receipts or those that don't even issue any receipts.

There are exemptions for certain types of business. Like freelance photographers, tutors, home computer repairs, etc.

    http://www.acra.gov.sg/business/whatbiz.html

Although exempted from the need to register a business, the income charged for services are taxable and need to be declared in your income tax. Usually under "Other Income". Anyone caught will be charged under Tax Evasion.

There are also advantages of registering your business, so that you can issue a proper tax invoice, open a company bank account, etc. If I am not wrong, it is illegal to issue a invoice under the name of xxx photography, etc unless the name is a registered business. For such cases, at most you can issue a receipt under your personal name in order to be considered valid.
