Ricoh's GR Digital camera has been favorably received in the Japanese market in spite of its rather high price point, selling some 3,000 units a month, reports JPEA International PEN News Weekly. Almost six months have passed since it was launched in October, but the digital camera that sports a 28mm wide-angle fixed-focal lens and an 8-megapixel imager is still selling at around the same price of about ¥80,000 (US$678).

About 40 percent of the buyers are using a digital camera for the first time, which indicates that those who had hesitated to switch to digital camera decided to purchase the GR Digital after acknowledging the features and attractions of the camera, says PEN News Weekly.

Different from the old GR film camera that became popular among photo enthusiasts by word of mouth, Ricoh makes the most use of blogs as today's word-of-mouth approach, says the article. According to Ricoh, the total accumulated number of accessed pages exceeded 4.4 million in the middle of March and the total number of "track-back spiders" linking blogs mutually exceeded 5,700. The network number is still increasing by about 30 blogs a day."
