Have used most of the major brands in my ex-company with 95 plus user. I can tell you what su*ks.

    1) Dell
    2) Toshiba
    3) Acer
    4) Twinhead
    5) HP/Compaq
    6) Sony Vaio

After 2 years of brand testing, we settled with IBM and some fujitsu. Although IBM design is really ugly, but it is designed for a purpose. Example, the edges are tappered to prevent water from getting into the main unit when the screen is down. During a drop, the casing also absorb shocks better to save the screen, HD and so on.

Some notebook look really cool, like the Sony Vaio, but after one drop, it is almost certain to mark it's death. Had a vaio died (Screen crack) when someone accidentally drop a CAN of coke on it's cover when it is in closed position.

Not sure about how long warrant are for the rest of the notebooks, but IBM and Fujitsu comes with 3 years international warranty.

IBM is really heavy duty if that is what u are looking for. But if size, weight and budget is concern, the acer travelmate 3000 series is the best value for money. I got it for my wife, so far it is ok just that it can get rather warm, but than again she put it on her lap. if u use it on the table, not so much of issue. If for lower cost, the apple ibook seem like a good buy too. got a friend bought for around 1.7k. Slightly heavier though, 2kg plus where else the acer model is only 1.4kg

    hope this helps!

    1 impt pt...
Do not forget that ultraportables are ALOT more expensive when compared spec-to-spec with normal weight laptops.

I have a Toshiba Satellite... since 2001... till now it's still working... except:

    1. the keyboard gone case (using external plugged-in keyboard)
    2. the com is very slow (of course.. wat do u expect of a Celeron 700 from circa 2001?)

But anyway, I have not experienced any other problems other Toshiba users have experienced.

My hard disk is still running normally after 5 yrs..

Now I just use my desktop n MacBook Pro...
