Caught this hornet guy snoozing under a leave on a beautiful morning at MacRitchie. Was about 15 cm from its hideout.....

Good Stuff! I have always been afraid of shooting hornets, they normally buzz away if I try to get close.

Good focus on the head.

Did you PS the shot or Auto levels? Cos the blue on the insect is abit unnatural. And the shadows at the bottom half is quite harsh.

Yes I kinda PS the shot a bit. The shadow is rather harsh cos I am using the camera flash. Hope to invest in a ring flash soon. Do you have any recommendations?

Not to familiar with ring flash, but I know they are quite ex. Also, for Jumping spiders, the catchlight they create are quite ugly....you know a white ring in the eyes? So have to PS it out.

You may want to consider a off shoe flash with diffuser or bounce, and position the flash near the lens....I see many experts do that....

Thanks for your advice. May consider modifying my existing flash as per your recommendations
