Thread: What major breakthrough to expect in lens technology?

Default What major breakthrough to expect in lens technology?

In electronics, new things come out every year. Lens seem to be quite
stagnant since a 10 year L lens still is worth 80% of its original price.

Will nano technology and fast electronics make any major breakthroughs
    in short time?

a lens that acts like a human eye yet able to zoom like a hawks eye and able to capture full depth at low light....

Wah...such as sapphire crystal or a diamond coating...that'll cost a bomb!

Lens that is made of liquid instead of solid glass, something like the movie Terminator that robot?

with advances in technology can have 10-500mm F2 anti shake that weights less than 500gram ?

lens that no need to keep in dry cabinet and will not get fungus?

anti-fog lens? come out of aircon car, lens will not fog?

auto-cleaning lens? no need to worry about dust particles.

auto-focus lens that no need to draw electricity from the body?

But there's such thing called 'liquid lens' developed locally.

I hope cost of raw materials become cheaper and oil price decrease so that we can buy lenses at lower price.

I saw the liquid lens at my customer LAB at IMRE in NUS. The lens is suppose to focus super fast.

Smart lens, which senses the unevenness of the lightling, apply some filters in those
bright areas to darken it, in order to get a more uniform exposure.

And smart lens which can focus on subjects and defocus other areas, which creates
a false depth of field thus better background.

Thats true, so someone needs to make the technology "manufactureable".

Yupz, but i heard that it'll be used more on mobile phone cams initially.

Built in filters technology at the selection of a button, whether it is GND, ND2, ND4, Starlight, UV, etc?

I'll rather have better lens manufacturing technology rather than all the bells and whistles - so lenses with quality comparable with the Canon L or Leica lenses can be made more afforable!

Faster zoom lenses, definitely. f/2.8 is still a whole stop slower compared to many fast primes.

ya i rem the news report.
think the benefit is that they can make a super light and slim profile lens that can focus.
for optical quality you prob dun want to go there..
i also hope for lens to get VR or IS capability ..
    gettting sian of lugging tripod..

    1. Price - bring down the price of lenses (good ones) through:
    a) Breakthrough in manufacturing processes/technology
    b) New and better materials that can be produced more economically

    2. Design
    a) Smaller, lighter and more durable (scratch, knock, fungus and splash proof)
    b) Further improvement on VR/IS technology
    c) Eliminate warp on corner for wide-angle lenses

    3. Range
    a) One lens fits all , you carry only one lens. No need to change lens, not issue
with dust, weight .....erm....are we referring to P&S

    Cheers

Yupz...as said earlier that this liquid lens is made for fast autofocusing.

Maybe in future all lens will have IS or VR capabilities when it becomes more affordable.

Liquid lens technology works only for very small lenses. You'd have a hard time stabilising and suspending a droplet big enough to serve as the front element in a 1200mm, f/2.8 super tele .

Ah...that explains for the mobile phone cams.
