Just got this off the Bloomberg:

Canon Shares Rise on Digital Camera Sales, Weaker Yen
    2006-04-04 23:04 (New York)

    By Aiko Wakao
April 5 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Canon Inc., the world's
biggest digital camera maker, had their biggest gain in more than
two years after a research firm said the company's shipments
climbed by a third in 2005.
The stock rose 3.9 percent to 8,370 yen in the morning
session on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, increasing Canon's market
value to 7.44 trillion yen ($64 billion). The Tokyo-based company
is Japan's second-largest manufacturer by that measure behind
    Toyota Motor Corp.
``The good news about digital camera shipments is feeding
into the market's positive outlook on the company's earnings,''
said Hisashi Moriyama, a Tokyo-based analyst at JPMorgan & Chase
Co. ``The consensus is that Canon's first-quarter earnings will
be better than expected'' because of a weaker yen.
Canon is also a favorite among overseas investors who have
been raising their Japanese equity holdings, he said.
The company increased global digital camera shipments 29
percent to 16.2 million in 2005, researcher IDC said yesterday.
Eastman Kodak Co., the world's third-largest digital camera
seller, lifted shipments by 50 percent to 13.1 million, closing
in on Sony Corp., which shipped 14 million units.
Shares of Canon have risen 44 percent in the past year, and
trade at 17.9 times future earnings. Nikon Corp., its closest
rival, trades at 39.3 times earnings.
Canon's stock jumped as much as 4.8 percent today, the
biggest gain since November 2003, enabling Canon to overtake
Sweden's Ericsson AB in terms of market value.

    Digital SLRs

The Japanese company is also benefiting from sales of
digital single-lens reflex cameras, geared for professionals and
hobbyists, according to IDC. Canon controls more than 50 percent
of the world market for digital SLR cameras, which use
interchangeable lenses and stores images on a computer chip.
Canon on Jan. 31 said it expected net income to gain 5.3
percent to 98 billion yen for the three months ended March 31.
Sales may gain 6.7 percent to 900 billion yen, while operating
profit may climb 6.8 percent to 153 billion yen. The company is
forecasting a seventh year of record profit.
Canon, which gets about 70 percent of its sales overseas,
based its first-quarter estimates on exchange rates of 115 yen
against the dollar, and 135 yen against the euro. The yen traded
at an average 117.73 against the dollar in the first quarter and
    140.91 against the euro.
The yen's decline increases the value of overseas earnings
when converted to the local currency. Nintendo Corp., the world's
biggest maker of handheld video-game players, yesterday said it
would book a 45 billion yen gain for the year ended March 31 on
    the yen's depreciation.
