I think get the AFD 105mm f/2.8 because it can be use as macro too.

My thoughts.

i cant give more info because I dont use 85mm f/1.8 that often. The last time I have it, I used it for less than 1 week(borrowed). As for 105mm, I just use it for macro

I suggest can do more search and ask what kind of photos you want to shot. Then buy the one you are most comfortable with it. Buy 2 will make you keep one in dry cabin. Can go and find which bokeh looks nice. Then buy the one u like.

My thoughts

act i feel that the 85 is just right...the 105 will give u too much reach and tend to make alot of your images too tight.... that is unless u got all the space that u want....

Yup I also found 85mm is just the nice focal length, nice angel of view, nice working distance, 105mm I found it is too long. (I have both)

hmmm, but in terms of distortion? is there a great difference between the 2? i am also concerned that 105 will be too "long"

scared too long then use 85mm like what they say. do a slightly cropping if needed, quite sure your cam have enough resolution for a little cropping

for me i would go for macro, y not add more bucks for more function just incase u decided to go MACRO and need to buy another macro lens. im not that rich to afford so many lens so i try to go the more "anything" way haha

Aiyoh... short you worry too short, 105 you worry too long.

Just move backwards. It's ok one.

though its f/2.8 for the AFD105mm, but when you use the macro function, it will not be fixed at f/2.8 instead at f/4

Whats the image quality for portrait taking using the 105 macro..will it be too sharp? The portrait lenses are known to produce sharp but flattering images. I trust the 105 f2 DC though. Dont have it but briefly tried it, and i have the 105 f2.5 AIS, and its a really sweet lens..I dont actually like the 85 1.8 version though as I think the image quality not as good at bigger aperture. But in studio environment it should work since typically shot at small aperture..

Hardly. It's not sharp from Micro glasses, it's FLAT. That's why it looks sharp and myths on Micro glasses being oversharp for portraits appear.

I've some shots from the 105DC @ f/2~f/5.6 but don't know where they are now. The DOF/Bokeh for the DC is much much superior IMHO.

if u're serious about getting a lens mainly for portraitures, there's only 1 true choice and that is the Nikkor AF105 f2-DC lens.

accept no substitute. once u use this lens, u will understand why.
