Well, it all depends on ur needs OR, if u have loads of $$, wants.
What kind of photography u are into also matters, as u probably wont really want a 50mm f/1L if u are into shooting birds. Nor getting a 400mm f/2.8L be really useful if u are just doing casual snapshots of like say, birthdays etc etc.

If u're just into general photography, u might just probably want a couple of consumer zoom lenses to cover a wide focal range.
Something like a 24-85, and a 75-300 would suit u well. Such lenses are very versatile and should be sufficient for most of ur needs. But if u are particular about optical quality, u might want to invest in prime lenses, such as the 50mm or the 85mm. These are generally sharper and have the benefit of wider max apertures than consumer zooms, useful in low-light conditions.

D60 should be around $4K (OK maybe $3800 street price).

Secondhand D30 about half of that.

Lenses, depending on how "deluxe" you want to go.

    Consider the following:

    1. Canon EF 50 mm f1.8 approx $135
    2. Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX approx $700
    3. Sigma 70-200 f2.8 approx $1.4K

That should cover a good range, excellent optics, and include a prime lens for portraits.

If you want an extra wide as well, I'd recommend

    4. Sigma 20mm f1.8 approx $650

No. 1 and 4 make a killer combo for night street photography.
No. 2 is good for indoor / party shots
    No. 3 is indispensable

Throw in another $40 for a cheap external auto flash (Achiever 260T) and you're set.

    Hope that helps.

    eadwine,

I second Streetshooter's combo, exactly the same taste to me, who is also under budget. If u like, can visit my site and have a look at my equipment list. All relatively cheap stuff, but I still have as much fun as anyone else here. I've foreseen u will be a great photographer, dun let the equipment bound your talent.
