Hi all,
I'm a newbie with a D50. One daunting ques. Is it wise to get a Nikkor 18-200 and sell away my kit lense 18-55 and also my 55-200?? Is the only factor convenience that u don't have to change lens or the pic quality is of a difference?? Pls comment Thanks |

If it is to replace the 18-55 and 55-200 than the ans would probably be yes but again I don't have any experience with the 2 lens in the first place.
In all respect the 18-200 is a fine performer and is currently the best in its class. |

... but I think in this case a 1 is better than 2.
Don't own any of them though; so don't count on my judgement.

Buy 18-200 and sell the 18-55 & 55-200 if you :
1. Have $1000 to spare (after selling 18-55 & 55-200) 2. Don't mind carrying heavier gear 3. Don't want to change lens all the time 4. Rely on technology (VR) instead of skills |

As for image quality, I would say all three are average performers, but even the average nowadays are producing pretty good quality already, so you can rest assured they are all worthwhile buys. I've only tested the 18-55/55-200 before, I'm pretty amazed at the performance of the 55-200, till date however, I don't have a chance to play with the 18-200VR so I cannot comment much liao. |

So far both lenses not tat bad as i got both. Juz got the 18-70mm as well. Its a matter of preferences as espn had stated also that how "it will fit your usage and you try and justify if it is worth". Some like it light, while others prefer convenience. The man behind the cam plays a more impt part

Quality I think for $200 55-200mm lens is good. The lens is VERY light. My dislike is the front ring rotates when focussing, making use of CPL filter troublesome. |

I suggest you to have a feel with the 18-200 first. See if you like that or not. Then make your own decision.

I will keep the 17-55mm f2.8G, but if it is a 17-35mm f2.8d IF-ED I will swap with you for my 18-200mm VR.

As you mentioned that you are a newbie, I'd recommend that you keep both the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. The 18-200 lens costs $1260, definitely not what anyone would consider as 'cheap'. It's not worth putting in that kind of investment when you're still pretty new to the photography hobby. You may realise later that photography may not be your 'thing'.
That aside, the 18-200 lens weighs almost twice as much as either of the lenses you've mentioned. Also, the filter size is larger at 72mm, compared to 52mm for both the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. |

The most important thing is that 18-200VR is a good glass, but it does not replace every other piece of glass out there. |

I don't think I would ever take the VR lens off my camera unless I require a specialty lens. |

I also just got a copy of the 18-200 and am having great fun with it. What's important to me is how sharp a lens is when taking photos. Having VR helps when you are in situations where you dont have time to review the photos you take and you're in need of taking sharp photos. I'm also an amature and sometimes take a few blur photos here and there every now and then with my other lens, the 24-85. Both the lens i have are all sharp lens and i am very satisfied with them.
How are the photos you take at 200mm using your 55-200? I havent used one before though but i can tell you VR helps me alot at 200mm. ![]() |
