Default Views on Spine Fusion/ Disc Replacement

    Hi all,

I am not sure if this is permissable here, but since CS is such a large community, chances of getting some info on this should be higher I guess. I was asked to consider getting a spine op done on my lower back. Suggested on fusion as it has been around for ages and has many success stories. Not very keen on it as I have been reading about new developments in Disc Replacement technology. NUH carries the ProDisc and Raffles Hospital both the ProDisc and the Charite models. From my readings both are relatively very new here. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the above. Any info is much appreciated, preferably real living experience and not internet articles as I have covered quite a bit on the internet and magazines. Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

If can discuss over email/in person would be best.

I am interested to know more about this too, so far I think fusion has had success stories as my friend an avid golfer had his lower spine fused due to a slip disc he suffered some years ago and has had no problems after the op at all.

I am skeptical about any open operations, but for this type of case especially if you had slip disc before there isn't much choice, right? is there?

It is also possible for you to see a chiropractor first, to see if the damage is so severe that there is no choice other than surgery. While a good chiropractor is not cheap, treatment is non-invasive and thus does not have risks like surgery.

Hi waileong, I've been to several specialist for the back problem and tried most conservative method and went for a minor op to clean up the affected disc. Got better for a close to a year and now the pain is back worse than before, recent MRI showed that the affected disc has "collapsed" (the way it was described by my ortho specialist). now sitting, walking is painful, lifting a camera is painful. Even having difficultes with daily chores.

Azul, would it be possible to link me up with your golfer friend, by email. Just need to clarify some doubts.

    Thanks a Million.

From what you've said, don't think you've seen a chiro yet. You might want to google, see what they can do.
