i am thinking of buying a lomo. not sure which one is fun.. considering between the coloursplash, holga colourflash, chrome actionsampler, actionsampler flash, oktomat.. does getting a lomo with a flash defeats the purpose of getting a lomo?
i am quite a poor student so maintainence of camera and film is also a factor in considering.. |

don't like the lomos very much myself (have a few) but he said he was buying one for fun, so i suppose that's alright. old rangefinders still rule tho! |

Flash is not an issue. Sometimes it adds to the arty feel of your photos too. One thing to note though... ISO 800 and 1600 films are a must. But films are getting more and more expensive to buy and develop these days.... sigh ![]() |

lomos use the normal 35mm format, although, like csy said - for most of the actionsampler-type lomos, you would need to use iso800 film.
i have little experience with the actionsamplers, but i do enjoy my lomo lc-a!! ![]() |

i got an old rangefinder at home.. yashica.. haha.. my dad left me that one.. reparing it cost me $150 and it is so bulky to carry around sometimes.. that's why looking for one that is easy to carry around and fun to play with.. think will go for the 35 mm type..

there are many models of cameras which the lomo company makes.. the first and original being the lomo LCA.. made in russia and extremely overpriced.. since you are a poor student that would not be first choice.. all other cameras are cheap, plasticky and probably made in china.. but for all fun purposes are quite cool.. choosing which one to buy boils down to what effect you want to achieve and your personal preference to which effect is cooler/more fun.. each has different functions.. for example.. colorsplash gives you wierd color casts on your photos(akin to using LCA with colorsplash flash but without long exposure advantage).. fisheye camera gives you fisheye perspective.. but is limited to just that.. the samplers let you take action sequences with lenses firing at preset intervals.. experience is needed in capturing a good shot and not all shots will be successful.. they come in diff versions ie. super sampler/action sampler/cyber sampler but bascially perform the same thing.. pop 9 and oktomat camera takes the same image.. but multiplies it by 9/8 respectively so you get 9/8 similar images on 1 normal frame.. oktomat is a concept blatantly copied from a disposable fujica camera which the lomo company sold for a short period.. very sly.. very smart marketing on their part.. i like the cameras.. but i hate the popular subculturalist marketing strategy that the company adopts.. very contradictory to the whole movement.. hope this helps.. haha

the LC-A, while being an 'authentic' product of LOMO, is not the first LOMO camera. camera production started way back in 1930. there were among others - the lubitel series, the smena series, the sokol-automat, the 135VS.. overpriced? prices did go up, especially ever since the LOMOgraphic Society International made a deal with the original LOMO to have exclusive distribution rights to the LC-A. E.g. savvy ebay sellers with stocks of LC-A soon caught on the wave, realising they suddenly have a 'precious' commodity in their hands. movement? THEY (lomographic international society) started the whole 'lomography' 'movement' in the first place - so they can pretty dang do whatever they want with it. Holga, sampler, etc ... they were all never manufactured by the original LOMO. yes, even the cameras of the other Russian manufacturer (FED) with a tradition and history of its own. they were all brought under the singular banner of lomography international society, repackaged and sold. why hate a successful,money-making business strategy? in fact, i admire it. /end OT. all this 'camera' talk is making me sleepy. |

oops.. my bad! jumped the gun in my phrasing there.. you are absolutely right the lomo company manufactures tons of other cameras.. i was actually referring to the camera that started it all.. which has to be the LCA
well i dont disagree that the lomo international society has been effective in its marketing strategies and is certainly admirable in its efforts.. its just that the original intent of these cameras was to make photography accessible to the general soviet population and it was widely available at a cheap list price.. but now.. its sort of an exclusive 'toy' available to only those that can afford it.. haha at the end of the day.. everyone has his own opinion about all this so just as long as we all enjoy our cameras and feel it is worth what we pay for it doesnt really matter!
