How many days, and how is your budget? Do you have a drivers' licence?

The main attractions in Gold Coast would be the Worlds (Movieworld, Waterworld, Seaworld and Dreamworld). Surfers Paradise is another popular attraction, but I much prefer the quieter spots along Gold Coast. You can try spending a night on O'Reilly's Rainforest Resort, which is situated in Springbrook National Park, see the glow worm cave at Natural Bridge, and take in the view at the Best of All Lookouts (actual name). If shopping is your thing, you can do shopping at Harbourtown (basically a discount brand-name shopping centre/factory outlet) as well as Pacific Fair (very large shopping centre) as well as go further down the coast to Tweed Heads where during some months of the year you might be able to spot migrating whales. If you plan to rent a car you will find no lack of places to visit up and down the coast within 50kms of Surfers Paradise.

Its going to be too cold to swim in the coming few months.

could be a bit tough under $1K. An apartment with car rental would come within $150-200 per day. for me I had absolutely no interest in the "worlds" so didn't spend any time nor money there. Just took the car and drove up and down the coast as well as into the mountains nature spots. A day trip from a Gold Coast base can bring you south to Byron Bay (eastern most point of Australia) and north to Noosa Head. Coolum (Sunshine Coast) has an excellent and quiet beach.

just don't fall asleep when driving. and if you like what I like, you will need more like 2 weeks.
