    2) D7D has probably has the best grip in all DSLR range. You gonna try and find out.
    3) LCD for D7D is bigger, color reproduction is one of the best (in fact better than Canon)
    4) Cheaper 3rd party lens. eg 17-35mm for canon selling $700-900 but KM is only selling for 500- <720.
    5) D7D has better features (Bigger view finder, Larger LCD, Antishake) whereas Canon excels in shooting speed, focusing and lower noise.

The only thing about Canon you dont have to worry about is lens and is rather expensive. I had a friend who uses 20D but owned NONE of canon lens. So what for a good range of lens where you cannot even afford it!

Lastly, if you still not convinced, check my D7D galleries. They are mininal processed and mostly done with Sharpening only. Even a cheapo lens like Sigma 70-300 can produced quality pictures if used correctly. I would have to thank Minolta for a great Camera!
Sigh... If it were not for the KM->Sony situation I would have made the same choice. But we have to face the situation. To ask 'satay16' to wait (and we don't know how long we have to wait) would be to deprive him of getting into a fantastic hobby sooner. Bottomline is to make best use of whichever equipment you have by understanding it's strengths and weaknesses, harness the strengths and overcome the weaknesses to give you the best picture.

Let me share this picture which I shared in another thread. Shot with a Coolpix 2100 (2mp) and I don't think a DSLR can produce the same. A DSLR would not have been able to capture the foreground flowers which are barely a couple of cm away from the camera. The camera is in the midst of the flowers which are barely 15cm tall.

not sure about what sony is going to offer for KM users but if you can wait and see, some good offering might be on the way.

go for canon if you can afford "L" lenses, the rest is a compromise.

Why wait? KM A-mount is definitely not going to die for sure. Sony bought hundreds of million dollars technology would not have gone into waste. If you like D7D, go for it. I am sure it worths every penny. If one day u are not happy, u can jump system or upgrade! D7D IMHO is definitely one of the high class quality image producing camera, if you are gonna to wait, you are losing all the wonderful moments.

Whether the mount die or not entirely depends on Sony. I'm sure they will not let it die but we'll never know. How good will the future lenses for the mount be? Who knows, we may even see CZ lenses for the KM A-mount.

how would you people form a canon/KM system?(flash, lens, body, etc)
    my budget is around 4-5K
i am a zoom person(no primes, but maybe one for low light cases)
need a zoom range of 17 to 200
dun mind third party lenses if they are cheap and good
    might need a macro lens.
quality must be high. kit lenses not my taste.

from what i can see, canon L lenses are good, but too expensive. i find that there are some third party lenses that are equally good as canon lens. one example is the 70-200/2.8. canon cost 2000, sigma cost 1200.

another question to ask: if i go for KM, is it very likely that my whole set up will be mainly made up of third party lenses? i noticed that G series are extremely expensive(more than canon's L). and also, how would you compare this two lenses: EF 17-40L vs KM 17-35/2.8-4?

    thanks again to everyone

    satay16,

You research more than me so I really dare not offer you further suggestions/ideas. But I would certainly like to know why after you lengthy research you did not even consider Nikon as one of your candidate?

    Thanks.

Yes it is true that G lenses are more expensive than L and the availability is low. But one word of caution my friend, before u are being suck into BBB virus of premium lens, do a research and check the comments on the lens on the website. If you check my lens setup configuration, I only got 4 lens. Out of the 4 lens, the 3 lens' quality is to what I do research close to L image quality and probably cost at quarter or less than half price of L lens.

As for your 17-40L and KM 17-35, if you do enough reading, KM 17-35 (Tamron equipvalent) is slightly sharper than 17-40L but image quality is not far away from 17-40L. But the price is probably 1 digiit number difference..

And FYI my entire KM system including wireless 5600HS flash is <$5.2K...
So if you buy that L lens... do the calculation for yourself. Is it worth the price and image quality? The answer is within yourself..

I asked the same question, he has given a reply somewhere down (mine is in reverse sorting order). He did not like the ergonomics of the Nikon. Apparently, it did not fit his hand well.

Yes.. very important to use something which you feel comfortable with. If not can be quite a pain and distracting. Nikon, Canon, KM are all very reputable brand.
