Post In praise of Canon

Canon has since launched the first EOS camera in the 80's. 20 over years have passed, and it has emerged itself as the market leader in Digital Imaging.

With that, in praise of Canon, let start a ball rolling why did you like about Canon?

For me, it the L lenses viruses.

Mine's not only the L lens, but also its EOS performance and durability! For me i'm proud to own an EOS system!

Low noise at high ISOs meant incredibly clean images straight out of the camera. I'm happy to use ISO 400 when doing telephoto shots, and think it's great to be able to bump the ISO to 1600 and shoot handheld even along the streets at night with the good 'ol kit lens.

Back in the days when I first bought my camera, an A40, I was also happy to be able to purchase a camera with real manual controls and excellent image quality, for around the same price as its competitors at that time. That doesn't mean this was the only camera at that price level with such capability though, since I am sure there were others. However I didn't find one capable of producing such clean images as the A40. At the maximum shutter speed length of 15 seconds, I was surprised to see only a hot pixel or two in an entire image. In most cases, there were none discernable.

Again, all brands have their own strengths. But I have my reasons for going Canon. They have grabbed me, and they have kept me.

I chose Canon because it feels right for me. The model I choose to use has the quility, ruggedness and features I find important. The quality of the L lenses is supurb and combined with the 1D body has the fastest, quietest and most acurate autofocus of any brand. Also the low noise at high ISO is great, especially when shooting in low light.

Well for me,

1. It's the affordability, right weight and size for my wife and me.
2. This is my first low end DSLR and I wanted to share with my wife.
3. I'm agonized by the missed shot that my old Sony F717 gives.
4. The good review on the low distortion on high ISO. (In fact, I haven't breach the ISO800 and ISO1600 mark too much yet)
5. Friendly service at their Cust Care centre at Habour Front.

Pardon me, but I don't own L series lens like alot of the Canon CS'ers to appreicate the value of it.

While all of us would like to have plenty of L lenses, there are also many non-L lenses that are excellent, some even sharper than L-zooms: 24f2.8, 35f2, 50f1.4, 50f1.8, 85f1.8, 100f2.8 macro, 28-105, etc.

I like Canon's USM (no pun intended to the thread starter) and overall AF speed.

Overall cost of ownership is lower than that of Nikon.

For me, four things.
Focussing Speed, USM.
Clean photos at high ISO
Because telephoto L-lenses are white
The option for me to go Digital FF if there is the need to do so.

How could I forget to mention - 8.5 frames per second @ 8.2MP. If/when this is needed there is NO alternative. Coupled with 45 AF points and supurb AI Servo this provides unparalleled opportunity to capture that perfect moment that would have otherwise slipped past or blended nicely in to the background bokeh as an out of focus mess....

In fact for most situations, 7 to 9 AF points are gd enough.

Then why would Canon wanna incorporate a 45-pt AF system in the first place if this were the case?

I'm chosen Canon EOS when switch to AF due to fast action photography athough using Nikon FM2 to learn photography since 1990...as no other brand can near to Canon USM speed at that time! When come to Digital, Canon win by using CMOS instead of CCD...wonder what's next?

Those were mainly incorporated into professional systems and also mainly used for fast action such as sports where the many AF points will be helpful in tracking. In consumer and semi-pro EOS systems, u'll never find a 45-point AF system. All are ranged between 7 to 15 points which is enough for the general shoots.

This one i'm not sure cos i haven't tried it myself. But i always use the centre focusing point and my other 6 AF points are rather redundant.

So, If i am a sports shooter, I would use the 45-AF point in MOST situations wouldnt I?
