Default Problem with TC for G5

I jus bought a vitacon 2X TC for me canon G5.
1.Paid $85 for it, wonder was i overcharged (Sry dunno prices for equipments)
2.After fixing it on, I tried full zoom, at my G5's 4X, which means i should get 8X with the TC right? however comparing to without the tc, but with digital zoom, the 1st pic actually less zoom than the 2nd, which is only using 6.5X, not 8.1X. Is this normal? or was i given a 1.4X tc instead?
3.When i zoom max and shoot with the tc, seems like off centre shots are blur, the overall pic also blurer by abit is this normal?

i would like to know the above probs r common for a tc or is it jus this tc i bought..

Btw another qns i have is that even when i shoot at max quality 5MP, the image when blown up to 100% in PS, its blur and abit pixelized and poor quality, basically not good to crop and view at 100%, must sharpen and resize. On the other hand, images fr a D70 look still ok at 100%. Is this to be expected from a non dslr proconsumer cam?

thanks in advance

I have an old 4MP Canon G2 and G5 should be better. At 100% view, the image does not appear pixelated. What ISO are you shooting? dSLRs will be expected to produce cleaner images anyways especially at the higher ISOs compared to prosumers. I have long given up on teleconverters for prosumer cameras - you invariably suffer with image quality, even if you buy the original ones. Post an image here about the pixelation if you need more help.

I understand about more noise problems with higher ISO
and i hav long given up any ISO above 50 for this camera
Only under really desperate conditions ill shoot at 100 or 200 iso then ill remove noise in PS.
But still it remains v pixelated even with the noise gone.
However im saying here is that even at ISO50, on a bright enough day, when shot at highest quality, when view at 100%, its not very clear as i view an image fr a d70 at 100%.

Take this as an eg. i didnt do any edit, only crop to show it at 100%
i find it blur, looks very low quality like.. like some vga camera phone

NB: i can always remove this pic if it affects anyone

Another eg.

On the other hand this image from a d70, cropped but still shown at 100%, is still clear, though not sharp.

Did you use digital zoom? Might want to turn it off. And you can't compare a digital prosumer with a dSLR.

Your photos look just fine IMHO.

At ISO100, my G2 can match what you had posted as the 100% D70 crop if I went the RAW way. As for in-camera JPEG I can only tell you that the Canon G series can do much better than what you had posted. Suggest you run some focus tests and also the second picture looked over-exposed to me. What shooting mode are you using? P is fine most of the time but Av or Tv modes gives you more controls.

I think this might jus be the problem.
Because i shoot often at the lowest fstop setting possible...
I thought its better becaue i can focus on something and objects far away will be nicely blurred and for the same exposure i can hav a faster shutter to remove any shakes...

With my own Canon G2, I do not find diffraction to be an issue even at the camera's maximum f-stop.

The first image (now mentioned was with the teleconverter) is definitely attributed to the teleconverter. What I would suggest you do is to take regular pictures with the fastest aperture (f/2?) and check at 100% and see if the subject is in focus. Use a reasonably fast shutter speed outdoors (1/500s) or tripod mount the camera if you want to. Please post some pictures at 100% crop if you think there are some issues.

I am of the opinion that your camera can produce very high quality pictures because it has an excellent lens better than most prosumers I have seen. It should be much better than my own G2 which is still giving me excellent images printed at 8" x10".
