Default 350D with non-dedicated flash

Has anyone tried using non-dedicated flash with your Canon DSLR?
The manual doesn't say you can't. As long as the voltage is ok, seems that it is fine execpt that you can't have TTL.
Taking it one step further, how about say a Nikon flash, with Canon body. Manual says it might not work, doesn't say that you can't.

There are people who use a Nikon flash on an EOS system. Still works but only as a TTL autoflash.

Found some info from the net
http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/EosFlash.html

So as long as the flashguns voltage is not over 6V it should be ok.
But don't understand the part about not letting flashes' pins not touching the DSLR's connectors. Any TTL flash will have these pins..

Much as I love my 350D, I object to Canon's marketing strategy. Ever notice how expensive their accessories and consumables are, as compared to other brands? And I am not referring to DCam stuff oni. That is why I am thinking about alternatives.

Anyway, may be safer to get a wireless remote and hotshoe. Then again it is not completely safe as the wireless remote has to be checked for its voltage too.

Well if you feel so strongly about their strategy you can always go for other brands of cameras. Some buy nikon systems cos they feel the lenses/flashes are more affordable. No use stating the obvious here... even blind fools knows you pay a premium for the canon brand.

With regard to consumables, if you think canon is ex. wait till you get HP stuff. Their inks are killers... they force you to change print heads with every cartridge.

Yeah...my colour and black inks already cost me nearly $100 to change.

Didn't use the word strong lah. Just object only, not strongly object.
Like many pple may object to certain garmen policies, but when comes to voting, still vote ruling party.
