Default Which Canon Lens should I get?

    Hi,

I'm thinking of getting new lens for my 350D. I usually use the camera for taking pictures of friends during gathering or when I go travelling. Between the below 2 lens, which would you suggest that I get? Thanks in advance for help

    EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
    or
    EF-S 17-85 f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

Basically, they're are the same lens. One is for film and the other is for digital.

do note that some canon bodies are unable to support EF-S mount lenses.

????????? confused???????? if i have to choose from your list, i would recommend the 28-135. the 17-85 has some serious issue with distortion and CA.

but on your 350D, the 1.6X crop factor will make you 28mm max wide abit restricting. when you try to take groups in an enclosed area, you will keep cursing the 28 to be wider. i will therefore recommend the 17-40L. this lens is the best(other than the 16-35) for group shots.

Its seems that EFs 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM would be more suited to your use as stated.
However I do agree with "satay 16" view that EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM is far better lens but with a much higher price.
Also ask yourself how much you are prepared to spend? Also are you willing to accept 3rd party lens may well help you in deciding the lens you want.

My budget is around 1-1.2k for the new lens. I like the "IS" technology from Canon. Cause I realise some my photos, especially those taken with slow shutter speed, are abit blur. Does 3rd party lens have similar sort of technology?

The 17-40mm isn't that much more expensive than the 17-85. Cost wise they're comparable ($1K region). But the quality of the L is significantly better which is why many would recommend the 17-40 over the 17-85.

Do note however that you're trading away an extra 45 mm + IS for much better quality, in terms of build and image. But in yr case I think you'll be pretty happy with the 17-85. Its very versatile and covers a very useful range.

I think the EF-S 17-85mm IS would be more useful for your current useage, especially if you are using more for snapshots.

As said, the 17-85 has serious CA issues at the wide end... Best if you get the 28-135 IS which is a very sharp lens. I have it and I love it!!

I have used this lens myself. Optically, the 28-135 IS is heads and shoulders above the former. Reviews can be found here:
    http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=27&page=1

However, if this is going to be your only lens, then perhaps you may want to get the 17-85. 28mm is not wide enough on the 350D because of the 1.6x crop factor. The 17-85 suffers quite abit from CA, has low contrast and does not resolve as well as the 28-135.

Alternatively, you can look at the 17-40L which is a very good walk-around lens, or use a combination of two or more lenses. eg:

    16-35L
    24-70L
    70-200L

this is a common setup. Personally, i use:
    17/3.5
    24/2.8
    35/1.4
    50/1.8
    90/2.8
    135/2

    16-35/2.8
    70-200/4

This allows me to pick and choose glass according to what i am shooting. This helps save weight and thus i can travel lighter than if i have a setup with zooms. Feel free to ask me about any of these lenses.

A 3-lens lineup is more pragmatic than just one lens, try to decide what lineup you want, based on how you shoot, then acquire the lenses over a few years. As you shoot more, your lens requirements will also change. Thus, getting the lenses one at a time is a better idea, as a lens you think you need may not be used in future.

    -200/2.8L
    Macro
    -150/SIGMA
    -200/3.5 SIGMA

I propose you spend more on the lens you will use more often. Heavy lenses like the 600/4L that will stay at home are quite redundant. look at your current needs and split camera-lens funds roughly 1:4 Getting one lens at a time is probably a good idea.

    16-35L
    35L
    85/1.2L II

    Option B $6500
    16-35L

    70-200/2.8IS

    Option C $2500/3000
    17-40L
    50/1.8 or 50/1.4
    70-200/4L

    Option D 1.9K
    17-40L
    28-135 IS

    Option E 1.2k
    18-55 Kit Lens
    50/1.8
    28-135 IS

Do let me know if this helps.

alternately, you can wait(if possible) for the 17-55 IS. but i heard that it fetches quite a hefty price tag.
