On a recent trip to Asia I snapped normal tourist-type pics and posted them to my blog. Before long I received an email notifying me that someone writing a horoscope book would like to use them. The author asked what I would charge for use of several pictures. I have no experience in something like this and wondered what advice I could get. I would honestly be fine just letting them use the pics for free, but as a starving student I feel that any extra income on the side would go a long way.

It depends on the sizes they are looking at, a 8"x10" at 300dpi would probably sell US$150 and more. The minimum size should be around 5"x7" at 72dpi. Best is to do some research on the internet like Gettyimage and see how they price their images.

How many books are they going to print? How is it going to be distributed? Worldwide? You need to also find out how big they are going to be used and where. If it is a cover shot, you could probably ask for more.
