First off, what is your budget? It is very hard to recommend a specific lens as there are such a wide variety out there, from primes to zooms, ranging from few hundred bucks to over tens thousand. But generally, most aspiring bird shooters starting out usually start off with something fairly affordable, say a 70-300 zoom, then move on to a longer prime like 300mm or 400mm, or a 50-500mm zoom or its equivalent, and finally, if they are really serious and dedicated enough, move on to the big guns (500mm primes and above). For shooting birds, esp. thos in the wild, a lens of 400mm and above is recommended. A good starting point would be a 300mm f4 or 400mm f5.6 as NewGuy69 mentioned. Cost is abt 2k or slightly more, and gives you very good image quality. The 300mm f4 is usually combined with 1.4x TC which still gives sharp and high quality images. |

I advise the 300mm f4L IS USM + 1.4x TC... Have that to compliment my 500mm f4L IS USM for flight shots...

In that case I recommend a Sigma 70-300mm APO. Should be around $300+ new.
You can also find a used Canon 75-300mm IS USM around $500 with some luck. |
