Default 3rd party lenses: the good, the bad, the ugly?

hi guys and girls,

i'm only familiar with canon lenses and the associated abbreviations like IS and USM and all the stuff..

what do the alphabets mean for the 3rd party lenses like sigma, tokina, and others?

is there a general order of quality as well? like sigma being better than tokina and so on..

this is because there's a lens on sale in b&s at a pretty low price, but nobody seems to be interested at all. pretty baffling.

would appreciate any advice on these matters! thanks!

generally no. each manufacturer, canon included, makes good and bad lenses. each lens should be viewed on their own.
