Just carried out a quick test at the office on the feasibility of using the Olympus E-330 for IR photography. I used a Hoya R72 filter on the kit lens and these are my preliminary observations:
1. The new LiveMOS sensor is capable of detecting IR radiation 2. The E-330 is not as IR-sensitive as the E-300 and longer exposure time is required 3. The One-Touch CWB still cannot do a CWB through the IR filter but the CWB if set to around 2800K seems to be OK for IR photography... and lagi-best 4. The Live View A-mode will let you preview and compose the scene through the IR filter on the LCD display ! As the image has a red cast, it is not very visible if viewed under bright sunlit condition outdoors however. Then again it is not very easy to view most LCD displays under such conditions too. 5. Alternatively, you can also look through the optical viewfinder and see the dark red image of the scene and compose that way in the bright sunlit outdoors environment. ![]()

Thanks Tomcat.
I copied this and put it into the Sticky, Camera Capable of IR. With credits to you, of course. |

Any estimate on the exposure (shutter/aperture/ISO) on a bright sunny day??
Thanks, |

I didn't even bring a tripod but took some test shots anyway. Still at the office, so can't post-process them.
I think would need to do a lot of trial-and-error testing to optimise this camera for IR shooting as the sensor is a completely new creature completely different from the usual CCD and CMOS sensors we have been using so far.

Here's a couple of the shots taken today at my place of work... no artistic merits whatsoever... just to see what IR pics from the E-330 look like...
#1 ![]() 3.2s, f/4.0, ISO 100 #2 ![]() 3.2s, f/4.0, ISO 800 #1 was under-exposed while #2 was over-exposed. So I guess a good exposure to use on a sunny day like this could be 3.2s, f/4.0, ISO 400 for the E-330.

Here is a comparison of the type of IR images that 3 different IR filters (Hoya R72, Ilford SFX 200, Cokin P007) produced when used on the E-330.
![]() 2.5s, f/3.9, ISO 400

Hi tomcat,
Thank you for taking much time and effort to do the tests and share them with us. Very informative I still rather the effect of the Hoya R72. Thank you once again ![]()
