The public thought the Eiffel was an eyesore. Now it attracts 5.5million visitors a year :P

Erm... 68 million seem a bit overpriced for a 280m bridge, speaking from a civil engineer point of view. Especially when it's only for pedestrians. Looking at the design, actually my first impression is the main concern will be the self-weight of the bridge itself. The architects must be charging really high design fees.

Though not a direct comparision, the 1.9km Tuas Second Link cost about $53 million to build. But of course the design is a lot more convention and simple.

I just hope that the bridge will not be plagued with hawkers, insurance/credit-card promoters and "survey-form" people.

It's cheap, if it does what it's supposed to do, ie bring in the tourists and create a buzz for Singapore.

It may be the civil engineering equivalent of a Philippe Starck kettle or juice squeezer.

unless it's from a 'star architect' otherwise architect's fees are very low (architects are actually badly paid relative to the amount of work they do, even in developed countries like USA) the bulk of the 68 million most probably go to the transaction of the land (sounds funny but true, even HDB needs to buy land from SLA to build) , custom made trusses, foundation etc, the contractors will have much to gain (especially foreign big boys usually employed by the authorities for such big projects)

Please read that the $68 million cost is for 2 bridges. One is the double helix pedestrain bridge and the other is the 6 lane vehicular bridge next to it. The mid-section of the pedestrain bridge will be connected to the vehicular bridge. So the pedestrain bridge is not that expensive.
