i did a retirement planning with a agent recently

i need to set aside 800 dollars now till 65 , so that i can have sgd2k to spend per mth for the following 20 years.

sad ley , i dun earn so much n the age gap to 65 is drawing closer, , also if i am not a contributor to the singapore economy , will singapore still want me ? at my prime to them i am an asset , but when i am old , will i still be loved n cared for ???

Don't you think your children in the tradition of a extended family network instead of the government will care for you?

    easy...

learn to say "upsize?" "what is your purpose here?" and "sorry cleaning in progress"

or else.... u can try "tissue paper, 3 for one dollars..."

Long time ago know that u can't depend on anything.

Nothing is free here. What is given will be taken back ! count ur lucky stars if it's not more than what is given (I think there are no stars at the moment.)

    For my golden years.

I will still keep my properties in Singapore to earn rent (a source of income).

I will want to move to places like Sabah , where the air & food are fresher with plenty of space and greenery around me. The place about as clean as Singapore.

I will rent or get a reasonable apartment there with a doggie and a part time domestic help, if they are still affordable in 30 years time.

I will need my satellite TV channels and internet (or whatever they will call these 30 years later).

For the same reason that the $$$ will go further there than in SG.....

IMHO, Sg is a good country to earn money but it's not the best country to retire in. think not too many benefits for our old folks here.. oh well

I have the same feeling. Having stayed in Melbourne, Singapore and Malaysia for a while, friends ask me will I give up m'sia citizenship and convert to Sg/Aus citizen, my answer is always no... there is where my roots lies and there is where I shall reside when I retire.

heheh yup...so long as I want to remaining here in Singapore. I have to throw the word retirement out the window and dictionary. That word can not exist here. Might not be so today...but can anyone say the same for say 16 yrs from now when I turn 60....and beyond.

Will the Singapore dream still be as rosy in the years to come?

the funny thing abt living here is tat they dont want u to retire to early but at the same time, u become obsolete when u hit say abt 45+? then cut yr pay by half n re-engage you.
dont think u will find tis anywhere else in the world. cause they wld rather go on welfare.

Well...i guess other than money..it's what you want when outta your retirement years. Standard of living is relative ba.

Jus like the survey done couple of years ago. If your standard of living means housing, transport etc...Singapore if one of the tops. If your standard of living is more of social well-being, Singapore is low. The survey shows that people living poorer countries enjoy more and are happier. Whereas people in capitalistic society like ours are mostly unhappy. What depending on what kinda standard you are talking abt.

When you are old...most ppl dun wanna have to worry abt money....emotional social well-being is top-priority.

it is not that bad here. If you compare apple to apple, there is not much place like singapore.
also when you are old, it is nice to stay in a small country with lots of coffeeshop with cheap coffee & food. by then I hope all the park connectors will be ready and all the nice parks. So can cycle round the island. Talk cok & sing song in different park or Kopi tiam everyday.
ANd SWay Sway if old liao become homeless.....at least you don't freeze to death sleeping in East Coast park.....and you still can good clean drinking water from any taps .also there is a couple place to gives free food. and if still string & want to work, there is always Macdonalds.
if really sick & no $$$, I don't thinhk our hospital will turn you away....worst go see MP lor........I would love to spend a few years living abroad but ultimately, this is Home.

Yup, will probably move to Indonesia, since my wife's indo chi. But not sure if i will stay in my Batam house, since that place is getting quite expensive also (the only thing good is that it's quite developed and only 50 min away). Need to get at least 2 boat hours away in order to get away from the commercialisation.

I just calculated, you will need about 91K per person just for food ($10 per day, ie just normal hawker fare) if you retire at 55 and live till 80. That's 180K iclud your spouse, just on food (what abt clothes, entertainment, power/water etc?)
Retire @ 55? My division just cut 13% headcount of my IS division the last couple of days, and just one of them is 56 years of age. And my company used to have 13K headcount a couple of years ago, so it ain't small. Really very sad when you see 40+ age ladies and guys crying in full view. When you have no money, don't even talk about retirement. So better pray that you have the $$$, or have enough children to support. Either that or you do not have any serious illnesses, else you wanna work at fast-food or as cleaners to support yourself past 55 also cannot. Serious, i lived in Chinatown for more than 31 years now and it ain't rosy.

You can survive pretty good with $2 per day on food alone in most parts of Indonesia. Come back when you are happy for a couple of days then move back. There are a lot of interesting things to do (or rather relax) in so-called "not so developed countries" like Indo, Thailand. Really depends on whether can you appreciate it or not. SMRT, SBS convenience, Suntec City, Orchard Road or even SG-type of kopitiam? nah....

Not staying in SG after retirement doesn't mean you are not coming back to SG for your family etc....

When you are truly sick or have serious operation or long term illness, it is not possible to fly to and fro for hospital treatment unless you have tonnes of money like tycoons.

It cost a bomb to fly you on a stretcher bed.

People who fly to overseas hospitals do so
when they do not have proper hospitals or good doctors back home.
Many rich foreigners come to Mount Elizabeth.
    They can afford it.
They may not want to risk allowing their local doctors to operate on
    them.

Some of these countries practice racist policies like a student with 4 A1s cannot get into medical school but another of another race with very much worse results can get in. So what type of "doctors" do they produce? So their people come to Sing for serious medical treatment.

Some of the people who fly to BKK hospital are doing cosmetic surgery. They are not sick.

Sometimes people fly as a desperate last resort because all the local doctors they see cannot cure them.

Do not think Thailand is wonderful for poor sickly migrants.
It is wonderful for rich tourists in good health.
I think if you have no money, you will find that you are not very welcome.

Nor Singapore..... it was just an example...poor one as it is I admit. Medical care is just one aspect as to why I would retire to other countries. Beside you can not guaranteed me that in a decade from now, that same quality of health care in Singapore will be that accessible or not surpass in time to come. We can not be that complecent to think SIngapore is always going to be number one compare to the rest of the world or for another thrid world countiry to rise up and beat us to it. This is just a discussion in theory lah heheheh...how it play out in the end..that is still up in the air.

If you are totally broke well...you have other issues you need to address before you can even think about retiring or falling gravely sick. If that happens yes that would be really unfortunate. I am not even talking about those folk having to have a stretcher place on a plane to be flow oversea for treatment. I am not that rich to think that far. But I do know of a few folk with diebetes and who get their treatment there in Thailand for example. If I did have something that bad happen to me..I know one thing. I am screwed. I can't afford it not just in thailand..I doubt I would in Singapore too. One relatively serous illness will wipe your entire medisheild off. What your insurance can cover...well let's hope it covers that particular illness you have because if it does not..make sure you have enough savings. But as I said lah..it is just an example. I could well be talking about another country too. ANd of course if I have as much money as a Minister I would be going to London or US for treatment. In any case, I have about another 16 years to think about it till it come. If you have more time then I do ...you are luckier then me.

Why retire in Singapore when the rest of the family are scattered around three continents.

I'd rather retire in Dandarangan Bay. Curious where that is? Google it.It may not seem glamourous, but it'll do.It'll do..

A bank ad says that in order to retire happily, you must have at least 2 million dollars with you. Hahahaha.....what a joke! This doesn't apply to most people in Singapore.

I noticed quite a lot voted NO. But gotta understand this to retire elsewhere, you will need $$ or be in demand for their country. So you gotta go there now and start working to get your citizenship. The grass is always greener over the other side, but I suspect a lot who voted NO would still be here in Spore - coz most Sporeans... talk only... hahahaa!
