I think it is very good, with wide angle lens we can move closer for the group shoot. If I guess correctly, Panasonic will drop the price of FX9 and sell the new FX01 at the current same price of FX9. The only question is what colours are available.

Nope, for a compact, the FX9 is very speedy.

some info about the focus...

Quote:
Auto focus… fast

The DMC-FX01 really will work hard to ensure you capture every moment important to you. The various AF methods can be selected according to the shooting environment and the position of the subject: 5 point, 3 point high-speed, 1-point high speed, 1-point normal-speed and spot. The remarkably quick AF response time, especially in the 1-point high speed AF mode, achieves outstanding focusing with both speed and precision. Panasonic has also included an AF assist lamp, providing further assistance in low light situations where focusing can be difficult.

I think cikgoo is referring to the lens max aperture being "slow".
FX9 at 105mm tele, the aperture is f5.0.
FX01 at 102mm tele, the aperture is f5.6.
These max aperture are not very useful, u can only use at broad daylight, outdoor, with OIS switch on.

For a compact camera, I am not complaining. But no doubt that the FX01's lens has sacrified speed for wide angle.

The review is out, the lens appears to be very good, not much distortion at 28mm, unlike other small cameras with wide angle.

I think its a very good buy! Maybe if lucky someone I know who is aiming for a new compact, can buy it, then can try it a bit

I'm certainly buying it if the price of the FX01 is abt the same as the FX9, which I expect it to be. Finally a quality 28mm lens on a superslim camera!

It is reported that the FX01 has a "high sensitivity" mode which should give it an advantage over the FX9 (if Panasonic has overcomed their problems with noise at "high" iso).
I am considering getting one for my wife and wd like to have her try it out.
Anyone knows when the camera will arrive in Singapore?

Tks But I was thinking, don't really need 8+MP and won't use so low shutter and raw for my compact.. But didn't want to get FX9 'cos it was quite an old model, so the only higher model was LX1.. But if FX01 came out to be $600+ (ie. same price as FX09) then I could've saved about $200+..

Was considering the FX01 as well (vs FX9) but when I checked during IT show, 2 reasons made me decide in the FX9:

1) Estimated arrival: May06 (I needed one for my trip in Apr)
2) Estimated list price: $999 ($300 more than FX9). The sales guy mentioned something about it being similar to Leica so price cannot be too low... i've no idea rgd the Leica statement.

This is what i heard... cannot verify with other sources.

I got the FX9 at $699 but comes with additional 1 Gb card, 512 Mb card, case, tripod, cleaning kit & LCD protector.

Hmm.. Quite a bit of freebies you got for the FX9..

Well, if FX01 is really $999, then I'm better off with my LX01 But the advantage FX01 has is higher iso speeds..

BTW, I suspect that guy thought you talking about LX1, 'cos LX1 list price is $999 and there is an exact same Leica version
