Default Manual Focus on Minolta Dynax 5D

Anybody can let me know how do using Manual Focus on the Camera DSLR Konica MInolta Dynax 5D. When i need focus an object, i only can use the AF to FOCUS the object then switch it to MF. if i direct switch to MF, i found that i can't focus any object.

After you turn the switch from AF to MF, you can use/turn the focusing ring at the front of the lens for focusing. I hope this answer your question.

Welcome to ClubSNAP, you may post more or find more info at Konica Minolta forum.

After switching to manual focus the auto focus at press does not work. The focusing is done on the focusing ring near the front of the lens. If you use third party lens they could be using a focus clutch. You need to push this to activate the manual focusing ring.

hugo, not very sure i understand your question, but what it sounds like you are doing is, your camera is in autofocus mode, and you are trying to manual focus by turning the manual focus ring on the lens to focus. it also sounds like your camera has been set to direct manual focus (DMF) mode in the function menu.

DMF is for people who want to use autofocus, then manually fine-tune it by turning the focus ring. so in DMF mode, you can only turn the manual focus ring after the camera has already autofocused, and the shutter button is still half-pressed.

if you just want normal manual focus, look for the AF-MF switch on the left side of the camera, just behind the lens. switch it to MF, and you can manual focus just by turning the lens focus ring. (like what zcf said)

Ok.. I am not sure what you mean.. But from what u said I assume you are new to DSLR.

You can switch to MF mode and then u need to turn the focusing ring in front of the barrel to focus the object. That's all! MF means Manual Focusing btw..

With the KM 5D, when switch to MF, the focus ring is already smooth with similar feel as when the lens is not mounted to the camera body.

The KM7D method cannot work on 5D cause there is no need for it.

Hahah. I think shibin was referring to my 7D. (You're just jealous aren't you ) It's called Smooth Manual Focus mode. In other words, it disengages your AF drive shaft completely from the lens.

In normal manual focus, the motor is disengaged but the shaft is still attached so that your camera can estimate the focusing distance and meter your flash accordingly. This gives a grainy feeling to the focusing because you have to turn the shaft also.

In smooth focus mode, the motor AND the shaft is disengaged so the only resistance to focusing is the lens gearing itself. My Sigma 105's gearing is extremely smooth so the manual focusing seems very buttery and nice in Smooth mode. The only problem is that your camera is completely clueless about the subject distance because my lens is not a D lens. Hence AS effectiveness maybe affected. If you use a D lens, then no problem. If you use a cheap lens i.e. 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 the manual focus won't be as smooth due to the cheaper gearing.

I can engage this mode by switching focus mode to Manual using the switch, then:
Press and hold lens release button
Press and hold centre AF button
Release lens release button
Release centre AF button.
I'll hear a click and the lens focusing becomes completely smooth. To go back to normal MF mode just repeat the above steps.

Note to 7D users:
When in SMF mode, switching back to AF will NOT work. You have to switch back to normal MF mode -then- change back to AF.

Hope this helps! =)

hahahahaha!!! my sentiments exactly when i read that. i'll bet its not documented in the manual? when Sony releases their first DSLR, i think we'll discover more of these up-down-up-down-left-right-centre-zoom-shutter-play to reveal some easter eggs or something...

btw, Timber Wolf's method works on the 5D too.

Doesn't work with the KM 17-35mm...

You sure it works on the 5D ?

When you switch to MF, can you rotate the focus ring away from the "infinity" setting and then go through the procedure. Does the camera move the focus distance back to "infinity" ?

Actually when u switch to MF on the front dial (front face of camera for 7D), the shaft is already disengaged. U can hear the click when u switch the back to either C, A or S. That is the shaft engaging the lens and then the AF motor spins to put the lens back at infinity focus.

tried it on the 5D, got the click sound, but the focus ring rotates after that, so the shaft must still be in. i can't feel any difference in the manual focus also. sure it works or not?

quite happy with the 5D manual focus feeling already lah. it depends more on the lens anyway. just don't give me stupid kit lens with the tiny tiny focus ring

Hehe. For the 7D, read the manual
Not sure if it works on the 5D though.

for 7D, when u engage MF mode, the motor disengages but the shaft is still engaged.
When you engage the Smooth MF mode, even the shaft disengages so the feeling is extremely smooth.
