Has anyone used the quatum battery pack? It could be used a camera grip.

?!?! Quantum battery pack used as a grip? Are u referring to those flash battery packs that pros carry strapped from their shoulders?

No. It screw under the camera. Checked the dimension and seems to fit the camera. The size of the pack is 5 x 2.25 x 1.6" (W/H/D) and size of a Dynax 5D 5.1 x 3.6 x 2.6 inches (W/H/D). Attached is the picture. Here the link to site selling it:

Err.... this kind of grip ar? What's the point? The purpose of the grip is to enable u to shoot vertically without changing your hand's position... if there's no shutter release, all the battery pack does is to add weight especially if u are not using an external flash and if u are not using the PC sync terminal on the flash as well...

That's true but by adding a simple slide switch to this pack you have your shutter release plus you can lock the shutter.

should be easier to get a nice piece of wood
carve it to fit your hand shape
drill through for screw to screw into tripod mount
drill another hole for cable release so got vert shutter release

pm me if anyone wants custom made one : )
price depends on type of wood choosen ...
and type of finish : )

can you make holes for batteries AA and NP400 as well... then make the sliding to battery compartment.

Read captnj post on how make a vertical grip using a Canon BP200. However I was not satisified with his version and did some modifications. I followed jsbn wiring diagram on the cable release. Here's the images.

Now you can use the canon's vertical grip shutter button. The switch for the switching on or off the vertical shutter button is not in use.

If I have time I'll modify the grip so I can draw power from it using batteries.

wow.. looks quite professional fit with D5D except the wire dangling out. You may like to work on that comestic on the wire.

I checked the wiring for the cable release. Basically 2 pins short when you half press to get focus and all 3 pins short to release the shutter. So therotically it should be no problem.

This is more of a battery pack for the camera and FLASH if need to. Double use... but the cable so far in market is for Nikon and Canon. KM, never heard of it...

The battery with flash can last over 1000 shots

The cable itself cost over $200 if not wrong...

The battery pack cost SGD55 from Cathay Photo. Cut away the battery insert with a pen knife. Next remove the covering near the shutter button. You will see 3 wires Blue, black and yellow. Blue & Black short at pre focus and Blue black and yellow short when shutter button is depress fully. Remove the exisiting cables and solder in new wires. You can use a CD rom audio cable for it. You need to cut it as you need only 3 pins. Next you need a hole behind for the wire to go through. Please follow jsbn's wiring below:

I was thinking of soldering 2 wires from the electrical terminals and add a plug to connect to the camera. Viola power from the grip also.
