IMO, in order to compete, the HP and Canon should price it competitively close. Unless they thinks otherwise.

This is good news. With competitions comes improvements. Err...hopefully in printing b/w prints.

Finally a PIXMA A3+ photo printer... and a pigment-ink based one at that!

What's interesting is that Canon chose to launch not one, but TWO flagship A3+ photo printer - the Pro 9000 and Pro 9500, using dye and pigment ink technologies respectively. Perhaps to demonstrate their mastery of both ink technologies?

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/06...nonpro9000.asp

I find the PIXMA Pro9500 concept of having all 10 inks in the print head interesting... it means that users do not have to swap inks no matter if they're printing matte or glossy. As some users may already discover, changing ink between black inks for matte and glossy is a big waste of ink because of all the plurging required in the process.

Well. if you think about it. R2400 really wasting ink if you switch the gloss and matt black frequently. It doesn't make sense. To make it more ridiculous, the size of the catridges are too small. We would end up paying for more of these vessels than the ink.

Canon is also coming up with new range of paper.

Thinking that I will printing both colour and B+W, Canon Pro 9500 is a better choice based on assessment of the published specifications.

On hindsight, Epson R2400's unique specialisation on B+W will still win over Canon, cos of it's 3 black graduations. Canon's is still only 2 steps.

So I will most probably go for Canon's. Sound logical to me, at least.

But you are a Epson fan, continue to thrive on it's B+W advantage, it is still the best for B+W.

The 9000 and 9500 were shown at the Aperture Seminar at Suntec yesterday afternoon. I asked about price and they said the 9500 would be around 1350, but i'm not sure if they were guessing or not. The sample prints we saw were amazing. they are also launching new "papers" and Fabrics to print on for the 9500 which will be interesting.

can't wait to do some of my own pics as test shots on one.

cheers

I thought the Canon Pixma Pro 9500 has gloss black, matte black and gray cartridge?? Isn't that like 3 shades for b&W??

I think you mean the 9000 at 1350?

In any case, the 3 highend printers are not out till "fall 2006", that is about 6 months away...

My reckoning is that if you are print glossy picture, the matte black will not be used, but still resides in the printer. The convenient is that you don't need to swtich the cartridges. It is still 2 steps only. Anything in between, the printer still depends on mixing of colour dye/pigment to get the graduation.

Therefore, the information published on the web about this Canon printer reducing the effect of colouration in B+W, but not total elimination.

Some of us do not like glossy paper at all. Therefore, on the other hand, if I only print on one type of paper, having to install an extra cartridge in the printer which I don't need is really wasting money. I'll not be surprised if the cartridge actually empties by itself after a few months of non-usage, forcing you to install a new one.
Guess it all boils down to needs.
