Let me try to answer some question correct me if i am wrong.

    more expensive
only fit to certain filter sizes
    affect image quality somewhat
Good close up filters are expensive cos they are made from very clean and pure glass with very little flare within the glasses. The advantage for this is that the exposure is not badly affected by just adding an extra filter though light needs to travel more than usual. The loss in light can be very negligible.

    Tubes
    cheaper
can be used on all lenses
    will not affect image quality
Tubes on the other hand are more popular cos they give very good magnification eg 50mm lense + 50mm tube gives a 1:1 mag. The down side is light have to travel longer distance so you loss f stops, you now need to open more for the same effect. Note that F stop refers to the ratio between the aperture size and the distance between the aperture to the film plane. So effectively you will loose light. Optical quality wise, usually ppl like to use the 50 mm lense cos they give the best bet for money and the quality for most or all the lense manufacturer is the best as they are the easiest to design and can be made with lense piece of lense, less lense means less flare and thus purer and nicer pictures.

So now back to the first question, which is better. Close up migh be better as it cut less light but on the other hand cost more for better glasses. So for cheapo like me, i go for extension tube. Just need to use a good and steady tripod to overcome. I now cut down the possibilty of lense flare too.
