Default Sigma 24-70 f/2.8

Hi everybody. I'm newbie using D70s, and i've few some question related to this lens.. This lens is about SGD750, and it does have constant aperutre at 2.8.

Any user of this lens and comment? Read from the online reviews, some said soft focus at wide open, then there is no use buying this lens if it does..

Another question about this lens is, does it support the i-TTL flash? does it provide the distance information to the camera??

I find that tamron is sharper at 2.8 compared to the sigma. AF is about the same, build also.

I bought this lens at Bangkok MBK. From my own informal testing, the lens is abit soft at F2.8 but still quite usable. It's 700g and quite bulky. Immediately I missed the weight of my Nikon 50mm 1.4 after I attached this "fat boy" on my D70. Browsed through some review online and it was mentioned that Tamron is sharper at F2.8. Macro wise Sigma is better. Stop down to F4 and it produce really nice portrait. Wonder if I can send the lense back to Sigma for recalibration to make it sharper at F2.8?

The 82mm filter was very ex man! I paid S$72 for the filter.

Lens not sharp at fully open aperture is due to the optical design. Nothing they can calibrate. They will need to redesign the coma correction ==> more expensive lens.

But Sigma's is 24-70, abit wider then the Tamron 28-75... hmmm Is the 4 mm a big different in shooting wide?

multiply out by the crop factor is 36mm

$72 is cheap at 82mm.. that's the thing I don't like about the sigma. It uses the 82mm thread.

hav u considered the tokina 28-80/2.8? its build is superb, not very sharp at f2.8 but peaks at f4(compared to most other lenses tt peak at f5.6 or f8) focusing is ok, quite loud compared to afs though

He was comparing the difference between a 24mm and a 28mm. 4 mm of difference. 24mm gives an equivalent angle of a 36mm. 28mm would give a 42mm equivalent angle.

for me 24mm is not wide enough on a DSLR. I will be getting a 12-24 lens.

So I rather get a lens that is sharp at f2.8. Anyway I got my tamron 28-75. quite happy with its sharpness even wide open. Only at 75mm it is slightly soft but still very good.
