hi, i'm looking for a good starter book on insects in the region, so that i can identify and learn about the different creatures i come across (paiseh to keep asking for ID here lah)...
i did some searching online and found this book does anyone know if that's a good book to start with? do you guys have any other titles to recommend? thanks in advance, i think many newbie macro shooters would benefit from what the older birds can suggest ![]()

What you found is a pretty good basic primer for insects in the region. Although it was written about 10 years ago, it's still an interesting book to start off with. You can also look for such books from the catalogues at Borders and Kinokuniya and many online stores. Where you found your book, Nature's Niche (Botanic Gardens Bookshop) is a good place to browse for nature books, as this shop is more specialised and stocks quite a good collection of flora and fauna books of the region.
Two books on Nature's Niche's website - Phasmids (Stick and Leaf Insects) of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and Dragonflies of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore are recent publications which are more relevant to help ID local species which we encounter. Both books are decently priced for the beginner too. For butterflies, there are a number of good books for the beginner, advanced amateur and experts. Some of these books are featured here. Scroll down the page for the books. The BP/Science Centre series of nature booklets are also a good place to start to learn about the local flora and fauna. ![]() Last edited by Papilio; 23rd February 2006 at 10:45 PM. |

I second BP/Science Centre series of nature booklets as a good starting point.
firstly they are cheap, and they are nice and small and fit in your pocket. too bad BP no longer supporting these books

hi guys, just an update and a thank you.
i've bought and read the "fascinating insects" book, and it's definitely a good starter book at an acceptable price. a simple introduction to a fascinating secret world. the next thing i'm gonna look for is something more detailed, e.g. with pictures and short write-ups of individual species or small groups. hope for more suggestions from everyone. in the meantime i'll browse the stores and libraries, and will post if i find something good. thanks again!
