Default Newbie Shots @ Sungei Buloh

Greetings!

Here's some photos taken during the Sungei Buloh trip last weekend...got up really early, only to miss the bus at Kranji MRT station and having to waste almost 30 minutes waiting for the next one.

Hope you'll enjoy the newbie shots. They're not pin-sharp, but hope they're at least identifiable. All shots cropped (except the monitor lizard) and resized for display. In most cases I intentionally underexposed by about 0.3 to 0.7 EV in hope for deeper colours.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the comment (and the much-needed bump) . Glad that at least the last one turned out well for you, and the lizards were considerably easier to photograph than the birds. The colour wasn't like this in reality, but an underexposure by about 0.3 or 0.7 Ev yielded this result.

Woke up at around 6 am, but by the time I got to Kranji MRT station it was around 7.35am. Then having missed the bus, and missing a bus stop after that, it took me till around 820am before I was even able to load up the camera and start firing. Going early is worth it though because of the quality of lighting. However I might also try going there later in the afternoon to catch the late day colours. Trouble is, I don't know if there's still any more birds out at that time of the day.

I see...there were still some birds hanging around the pool outside the first hide even around 12pm, but the lighting was not as beautiful as it was in the morning. One of the things I might do is to photograph there nearer to sunset time in the future. The risk is that they might lock the place up and leave me stranded inside!

If I remember correctly, the lens was already being used wide open at the longest possible focal length, and at quite a close distance without getting too close to frighten it off. Perhaps this is where a fast prime lens comes in handy.

Yup, and even then I don't know if they will wait for me. Hopefully, they stop all ticket sales at 6pm and also closeup at 7pm, but they still leave an exit point for people to leave at any time later than that. I'd probably only be as far as the Aerie or the first hide for late-day photography but the sun sets pretty late in Singapore, and it may actually be past 7pm before the sky shows its magic.

Yup...was considering weekdays. But yesterday I went down to Kranji MRT for a reece and found out that the last bus to depart from the station was 7.38pm. And I'm not sure what time the last bus will depart from Kranji Reservoir. Better not to risk it, otherwise I might end up caught at Kranji Reservoir without a bus back.

Heheh...I'm a newbie and you're probably better off asking more experienced photographers. However, this is not the best period of the year, as far as I know. The best period is actually between september and march, so we are reaching the end of the active phase.

That said, you'll have good success and finding birds if you're quiet, and there aren't noisy tourists tramping around and disturbing wildlife. The place where I got the majority of my photos was actually from the very first hideout that you'll see after crossing the bridge. Be on a lookout all the time though, just in case.

For shots on monitor lizards, you'll find them basking around the large ponds...approach slowly and without staring at them...and don't forget to try large macro shots too, on flowers or on insects.
