Can Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS use for even?

My company going to have a even, is it a good lens to use? and few more Qs as below

(1) inside the room is dark, is there much help with the IS on? will the colour becomes un-nature?
(2) what should be the aperture, ISO and WB setting (with 420zx flash)?
(3) how to avoid red eyes with the 420zx flash?

Use AWB.
You may try to use flash.
If flash cannot be use, try ISO 400 with IS on for better shuttle speed.

any lens can be used for anything, only how effective they will be.

f4-5.6 will be very limiting indoors.

flash is almost always advised indoors.

depending on the situation, clowdy wb may be needed to warm up pic as flash tends to make it pale. or alternatively, u can adjust awb to be warmer.

the very minimal noise exibited by iso400 can be easily removed with photo-editing software.

since indoors, ceilling bounce will be better than direct flash, firing into the ceilling will also help reduce red-eye. dont use the red-eye reduction function of the flash, its very annoying. red-eye is easily removed in software.

is/vr/as does not cause colors to be unnatural, what makes you think that? when off the tripod, its always advisable to use is. switch it off only if it drains too much battery.

i suggest that you do NOT use AWB. bring a white or grey card along to set custom WB. use AWB only when you are using flash. if you are shooting ambient lighting, then set custom.

but then again, f4 indoors is relaly quite difficult

To add on, you might want to shoot using ISO 400 to 800.

ISO 200 is definitely too low... If you want just 4R prints 800 is a good option. Gives you much more freedom to choose smaller apertures, since you already have IS shutter speeds shouldn't be too much of a problem.

By the way the 17-85 is an excellent choice for events. The range is good for both grp shots and candids. IS will allow you to use slow shutter speeds without worry. Looks like you're set!

But if you shooting alot on the Wide End, you might want to reconsider.
This lens seems to have a bad reputation for CA at the wide end.

True... this lens is far from perfect. You can talk about barrel distortion at the wide end etc and the list of short comings go on.

But for one-lens versatility its hard to beat.

the distortion is really bad at 17mm, i have tried it..but didn't the chance to try the 17-40mm f4 L, will it be better?

Yes the 17-40mm still exhibits pretty strong barrel distortion at 17mm, but nowhere near that of the 17-85mm. Can be considered a vast improvement.

Barrel distortions are quite typical of ultra wide angles... can't really avoid them. Its just a matter of how pronounced they are. But they can be corrected for during PP.
