nitellort, I am keeping it to salvage my HDD's data. I'm planning to get a 2.5" casing from Sim Lim and then use it as an external drive for my ACER Notebook now.

That IBM quoted you for a replacement motherboard comes as no surprise. Even under warranty they would replace an entire motherboard, it seems to be the SOP for anything hardware related. I had a jittery motherboard, there was a loose connection somewhere such that even slightly twisting the notebook caused it to freeze up. It took two tries sending it back to the service centre before the problem was resolved - the service centre told me that they had replaced the motherboard each time it was in. Replacing a motherboard takes up less man-hours and requires less technical expertise than troubleshooting and tracing a faulty diode or solder joint somewhere.

Now that I know it costs $1500 for a motherboard, I do not think I will repair my T41 when its warranty expires.

No point repairing and looking T60. i gave up on Thinkpad after Lenova took over. Those who have used the X and T series before will know. the QC, material and design is now of totally diff level. I have switch to toshiba. is truth, Toshiba is better too. Better configured for PS, better graphic cards and solid workmanship.

Ya, the general consensus is that not to repair. My thoughts exactly.
