Default Banded Sea Krait

The Amphibious Sea Snake or Banded Sea Krait or Yellow-lipped Sea Krait (Laticauda colubrina) spends its time mainly at sea in shallow tropical reefs. However, it frequently comes ashore especially during the breeding season when their eggs are laid on land.

The attractive silver and black banding covers the entire body from the neck area to the tip of the tail. The tail is laterally compressed and rudder-like, making the snake an efficient underwater swimmer. The species has a powerful myotoxic venom which will paralyze the muscles of a bite victim.

This snake in the image was found hiding deep within a crevice of a boulder by the sea to avoid being crushed to death by the hoards of child touts on Lombok's Kuta Beach.

Sea Kraits are one of the most (if not the most)venomous snakes in the world. One bite confirm die. Fortunately, they have very small mouths and are not aggressive at all. If you kena bite by one, you must have disturb the fella like siao and you must also have been damn suay because unless you kena bite on the loose skins between your fingers or toes, the mouth oh the sea krait cannot open wider than that.
