another alternative i can think of is 2 get a gd stereo system like Denon's DF101, add DVD player + subwoofer. may still hav cash 4 interconnects & speaker cables.

Mini hifis like the DF 101 is great, but the speakers need to be changed - i'm not a fan for subwoofers used in music... as for pure stereo (2 channel only).. i still like the imaging pre / power setups give. Flexibility to mix and match. My current setup sounds good whatever material's throw at it. - best part.. no subwoofer needed

    Depends on your music.
If listening to music, vocals (not rock) speakers like Spendor, B+W (Bowers and Wilkins from England and not the German filter maker) will do. Match with good amp (musical, not LOUD with flashing lights and many buttons).
If listening to karaoke and singing too (pity the neighbours who have to hear your karaoke singing), or if one likes to hear the boom boom of cinema action film sound effects, below-average speakers (in my opinion only) like BMB will do.

i cannot do w/o subwoofer 4 movies. i m using Onkyo's DVD player + Denon (v old model M10- VCD amp) stereo amp + Mission's M71 speakers (on no name stands) + Pioneer's subwoofer (black sheep of my system , no $$ le).

sound from River Dance will lack weight w/o d sub. i hav changed my interconnects, speaker cables & subwoofer cables liao... sounds as a whole!

hey guys, u may 1 2 try adding slabs of tiles, yes, u heard me. i find adding ceramic or porcelain tiles under my speakers & subwoofer increase its definition! i stacked 3 under my speakers & subwoofer!
