Default Can EF200mm F/2.8L be used with EF TC 2X/1.4X II?

I was wondering whether it is possible to do this combo.
Can EF 200 be used with Tamron/Kenko 2X TCs also?

It should work. Correct me if I am wrong, but I suspect that all lenses of focal length 135mm or above can be used with a TC. Stacking a 2X TC on this lens sounds like it'd create a usable and very long lens, but I worry about the drop in quality.

kenko 2x doesn't work with 200/2.8. if u must add tx, get a used EF1.4x will suffice.

lens best used wide open at 2.8. do keep in mind that a 2x will destroy the native clarity/contrast/sharpness of this lens. e use of TC also adds flare and fringing. i used this lens with an EF 1.4 MKI n sometime back n was taken aback when it flared right under my nose out in the field. my environment was very very wet with lots of moisture n airborne particles in the air. still the 200/1.4x combo is good.

some samples for ur consideration only.

Pure glass wide open

if u must use a 400mm focal length, i suggest u grab the 400/5.6L.

400/5.6 with EF 1.4x MKI sample, focus will hunt

Note i do not own these toys any more else can let u try them out to test.

so autofocus will not work on the 400/5.6 if the 1.4x is used?

I believe this is body-dependent. On the entry-level models, there is no AF at f/8 and smaller. Top of the line models like the 1DsMKII will still AF at f/8.

e first generation of Tamron 1.4x (AF) tele does allow AF on 350/20D series but these TCs are not available locally and difficult to come by. Accordingly to a user of the abovementioned combo, she swears by this lethal combo.

Of course, she is quite talented n able to maximise the most neglected 400/5.6. Forgot her exact website but it's on pbase. Her name is Dan*****

The 400mm is certainly no slouch. It's favoured by many birders, and some have said that it's one of the best birding lenses around with the sharpness and very fast AF. Not an option for me however because I prefer going handheld. Unless I had bigger muscles and better technique, it'd be hard to get sharp photos from a 400mm f/5.6 handheld.

On TCs, some have risked taping some of the contacts up to allow AF even on cheaper bodies. But it's not something I would do with equipment that's so costly.

don't get me wrong, this lens is second to none when it comes to flight photography

Indeed. If I were strictly into birds and wasn't allergic to tripods or monopods, this is something I would consider in a kit. Of course, cost is also an issue, but it isn't all that bad compared to the prices most other long primes fetch.
