Default S3Pro dynamic range showcase

hi people,

I just did some photoshop work to show the dynamic range of s3pro. All images are taken from ONE raw file.

Developed using ACR +0.3EV

developed at -3.0EV. S3pro can do pretty well even up to -4EV ....

Final merged output using tutorial at luminous landscape.

What amazed me is the details and the quality of the highlights recovered. The color graduations are there. S3pro stores 28bits of raw information per pixel...

Nothing Special, most DSLR also can do that to some degree.

ya, that is what people usually say other DSLR can do it but at -3 stops?

I am a terrible photographer but I have OWNED a D70, D7D, E1 before and none of them can recover highlights like the s3pro. Trust me I have tried, using the same software, same method.

The first shot is not digitally blown out. I developed using ACR with only +0.3 stops to bring out a little of the shadows.

The second shot is developed at -3 stops.

Other DSLRs can bring back something but usually the colors are wrong and there are lots of banding due to lack of information in the highlights. I have given an example from oly E1. I have raw files from my minolta D7D that shows blown out skies and after pushing -4 stops, the sky looks positively ugly. I am not sure what "other" DSLR that you think can do it, I will happy to lay my hands on it to try cuz the s3pro is actually terrible to use.

probably the 'other' DSLR is the S2pro..

I know to some, DR isn't important at all. they will start to say there are many more things to the SLR other than DR, colour repro, bla bla bla..

it's just one of those things that "as-long-as-i-don't-have-it-on-mine-it's-not-important"

good sensor...

BUT nothing else?

it is like pairing a 4Ghz CPU with a 128MB ram, using 5400rpm hard disk, and running windows 98.

mindef still using this config.. i think win95 some more.. must be good.

if the cam can produce solid pics with very little work needed to tweak the pics, you can save the time to shoot more pics with it or take a good rest. instead of having to shoot in raw every event/shoot then go home and tweak exposure, WB, reduce noise, etc..

some enjoy doing it. others don't. I belong to the 'others'.

GOOD SENSOR, and its a F-Mount, capable of using Nikon Speedlights.

Reasons enough to get it.

oh well to each his own la..... the dr of the s3 straight out of the camera is also v good...
the thing i noticed about digital blending and all is that it tends to make the photo look flat....

imho, based on metering to get wat u want to achieve...the s3 is serious....coz it doesnt exactly blow out much or lack detail in the shadow areas...

cheers

Yes, what puts me off a lot after jumping to digital is the highlight or shadow clip-offs, and it is directly related to dynamic range. Most people do not realize this especially if they rarely shoot in such extreme lighting conditions.

To some untrained eyes, they know film produce nicer tones and colours but do not know why. Dynamic Range is why!

Just asking, you said you just got to know this methord from luminous landscapes, but you've already tried it on other cameras before learning this?

Oh haha my bad.

Maybe someone can do a comparison of the S3 to other cameras using this technique with the same scene?

that would be a nice idea.
at least we can compare sensors and make decision on future camera purchase
