I have the Canon 28 - 200mm f/3.5 - 5.6 USM lens. Whilst its good for travelling, I find it rather soft.

Yes, Nikon has the 18-200mm VR, and it looks like it could make a great travel lens. However, I don't know about the quality.
I did some reading up in the past about then 18-200mm lenses produced by Tamron and Sigma and eventually came to the conclusion that I would buy the Sigma, if I ever needed something like that. Reviews on photozone.de seem to suggest that the Sigma 18-125 is better than the 18-200mm. Check the reviews out if you like. The combination which you have (350D kit lens and 70-200mm f/4L) blows the 18-200mm lenses out of the water though, because your 200mm end is quite usable at f/4. I wouldn't dare to try handholding the Sigma or Tamron lenses at 200mm f/6.3 except on a very sunny day. |

But don't think thats possible. Nikon version is about $1100, so if canon would have come out a same 17-200 IS, its most gonna be 10-15% more expensive only! |

Canon already has a 28-300mm....
Maybe they can come out with a 18-125 f4L IS to win the nikon in terms of image quality.... |

The Nikon 18-200 VR only $1250.. Why would the Canon one cost $2400? It should be within $1500, to be reasonable..

I have the Tamron 18-200 XR Di II, and its GREAT!
The pictures are sharp, colors are lightly saturated, pretty close to my old Canon 28-135 IS, 24-105 and 24-85mm. That said, in this new digital world, color and sharpness is secondary to range and convenience, if you ask me. We all go thru some sort of post processing after pics we take, thru photoshop or other software. Colors are tweaked a little and then a little post sharpening then finally print. So, what if the lens not soooo sharp, color not sooooo great? No prob, cos this is the digital age, minimal post processing is a norm, unlike in the old days of film, where the lens really impacts the final image captured on film, and you cannot do very much about sharpness. With a great range, light weight, and compact body with 11x zoom for casual walkaround, travel and family pics, i think its a great investment. I currently own an 18-200 for my 20D and am selling it as i'm switching to Nikon. But I'm ready to get another 18-200 for my new camera once i sell it. Ok, now that my opinion for this lens... |

Nikon glass got ED designation... somewhat akin to "L" already.. mabbe of lesser built, but pic quality should be above average liao.

Nikon's 18-200 is "ED", somewhat can relate to "L" class from canon, pretty good already for that price.

Well.. Suffice to say that if there is news that Canon is coming out a 18-200mm f/4L at ~S$1,500.. I will go and find every single camera shop in Singapore to put my name in reserve for this lens
