This is taken with a EF 100-400 + 500D filter. Superb!
![]() This is also taken with a AF-D 80-400 VR + 500D filter. ![]() |

I noticed in your posting of the images, u mentioned u used the 70-400mm f/4L with the 500D. The f/4L has 67mm filter diameter. So the 500D indeed comes in that size? The last time I checked I was told there isn't such a size. |

The 500D available in 52, 58, 72 and 77mm. I think you're referring to the 70-200mm f/4L? You can get a stepup ring from 67 to 72mm.

If a lens has an inherent higher magnification than another one, does it make it an even better macro lens with the 500D attached? For example, Lens A has a magnification factor of 0.24X while the 100-400mm stands at 0.2X. Lens A should be able to get a more frame-filling macro shot of the same subject right? If a teleconverter is attached to a lens, does it also increase the magnification factor? My understanding is that it does because a TC does not increase minimum focussing distance but does make things look larger within the frame. |

But I'm sure it also has something to do with the minimum focusing distance also.Yes, a TC works by increasing the magnification factor. |

Very sharp, but not as nice as a Tamron 90 Macro.

With 500D you working distance is severely limited to 50cm +/- a few cm. When you change the focal length say 100mm to 400mm, you are increasing the magnification factor only. Your working range is very narrow. Therefore it is definitely not more "convenient" than a true macro. E.g. it is very hard to chase after quick moving creatures (e.g. dragonflies, butterflies) while using this combo. If the subject is stationary, e.g. flower, still dragonfly, etc then the 500D + lens combo makes sense. That said, you can get almost 1:1 magnification at 400mm + 500D. http://www.galant-ho.com/summer04/si...e/crw_8044.htm So what kind of macros/close-ups do you intend to take? |

Check out megaweb's galleries too. I believe he has also used a 500D combination before.

Thanks nutek for the explaination, I am not inclined to chased after insects, but am more interested in patterns and texture in nature, so chances are my subject matters are still object. I do have a 90 mm macro, but that is only used if I specifically shoot macro for the day.....so the 500D is a good option for me...unfortunately getting it would have to wait for two weeks as the shops are not holding stock...I know USM has some, but I need to have receipt for the purchase which will be used mainly for work, thus I am claiming from my boss.
